Evelyn Martin Obituary
Martin, Evelyn Was born in Onamia, Minnesota, January 30, 1915, the first of seven daughters of farmers, Sophia and Arthur Vergin. During high school she moved to Glenwood, Minnesota to care for four cousins. There she met her future husband, Robert Huxley Martin. She cared for him when he broke his neck in diving accident and was hospitalized for almost a year. She went to business college and was an expert at shorthand and bookkeeping. After six years of dating, they married in 1939 and moved to Chicago for better job opportunities and had daughter, Bonnie; son, Robert; and foster son, Gary. In 1949 they bought a company with one employee and one machine. The company is now in the fourth generation of family members. Evelyn worked there until the age of 80. She and her husband of 63 years spent winters in Pompano Beach, Florida for many years and because she was afraid of water, she spent most days playing bridge. They traveled to many countries, especially the holy land and collected western art at auctions in Montana, Oklahoma and California. At home in Glenview, Illinois, she was an avid gardener and always had a fresh arrangement in the house. She loved watching birds at the feeder outside of the kitchen window. Lots of people called her Nana and enjoyed the colorful plates of delicious food she served while listening to classical music. She was active for many years in community concerts, garden club, church circles and bridge. She hated the color orange, but loved burnt raisin toast, butter, false eyelashes, writing letters, and especially the Cubs. Her goal was to live to 100. She died June 20, 2014 at the age of 99 1/2 . She is survived by three sisters, two children and spouses, nine grandchildren and fourteen great-grandchildren.
