Helen Karrer Obituary
Helen O. Karrer, 87, of Evanston, passed away on August 20. A native of Port Huron, Michigan, she taught in the School of Social Work at Loyola University, where she earned her Masters of Social Work in 1960. The daughter of the late Benjamin and Olive Karrer, of Port Huron, Michigan, and sister to the late Katherine Sheridan, Louise Weil, and Madeline Simpson, she was earned her undergraduate degree at Nazareth College, Kalamazoo, Mich., and practiced for Catholic Charities in Detroit, Michigan and Washington, DC. before coming to Chicago in 1958. At Loyola University, she was the director of field work for the School of Social Work. An avid golfer and world-traveler, she divided her time after retirement between Evanston and Manzanillo, Mexico. She leaves behind her beloved friend Mary Alice O'Laughlin, and many nieces, nephews and cousins from the clans of Sheridan, Simpson, Weil and O'Laughlin. Her zest for life, travel, entertaining, lively debate, backyard grilling and Margaritas will be sorely missed. A Memorial Mass in celebration of her life will be said Saturday September 6, 12:00 noon at St. Joan of Arc Church, 9248 N. Lawndale Ave., Evanston, IL. 60203.
