Barry A. Shapiro, M.D., passed away on Sept. 25 surrounded by his family, after a six month battle with pancreatic cancer. He was 71 years old. Dr.

Shapiro was a specialist in Anesthesia and a pioneer in the fields of Critical Care medicine and blood gas technology. He had been affiliated with Northwestern University Medical School since 1970. Prior to his retirement in 1999, Dr. Shapiro was the James E. Eckenhoff Professor of Anesthesiology, and the Chair of the Department of Anesthesiology at Northwestern Medical School and Northwestern Medical Faculty Foundation. Dr. Shapiro lived in Chicago for thirty years. In 1999 he retired and moved to Ft. Lauderdale, FL with his wife. They have enjoyed traveling and spending time with their grandchildren. He is survived by his wife, Patricia Prange; his son, David Shapiro of Chicago and his daughter, Leslie Fox; and grandchildren, Carly Fox and Drew Fox of Atlanta, GA. Funeral Services will be held at Baird-Case Jordan-Fannin Funeral Home, 4343 N. Federal Highway, Fort Lauderdale, FL on Sunday, Sept. 28 at 11 a.m. A Memorial Service in Chicago will be scheduled for the near future. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Barry A. Shapiro Memorial Fund of the Society of Critical Care Medicine.
