Not sure what to say?

Dear cousins,
I am truly sorry for your loss! Please be comforted that I am sure he is in heaven with (Aunt) Eleanor and my Dad, Bob. I saw Uncle Dick on WGN news shortly before the Notre Dame game and was astonished that he was still alive! Funny thing, though, I recognized him immediately and shouted to my husband in the kitchen that my Uncle Dick was on the news. I know that you will miss him deeply. My love to all the family. -Barbara (Stieg) Schumacher

We have lost a treasure trove of memories from Notre Dame's Rockne era. Dick would regularly encounter Rockne on his morning walk to the campus in the late '20s. "Good Morning, Men," Rockne would herald Dick and his roommate. Dick attended the 1928 Game in Yankee Stadium when and ND upset West Point. It was the "win one for the Gipper" classic and Dick recalled just about every play.
I'll miss our telephone conversations, Dick.

I will miss seeing Dick around the neighborhood. He was such an inspiration to me. He didn't seem to let anything slow him down and always seemed so cheerful. He was an institution on our block. I'll miss him. My sympathies to his large and loving family in their loss.

Grandpa, this is terribly hard to write. You have been in my life for so many years that it is almost impossible to believe that I will no longer be seeing you. You were there for my graduations, wedding, and even my 50th birthday party. People were always amazed when I told them my grandfather was still alive and still as sharp as a tack. I will always remember your amazing card tricks and your even more amazing coin collection when I was a child. I still have the Liberty silver dollar you gave me for my 8th birthday. It always brought me good luck. I will also remember the Cubs games we attended and how much fun we had. You are finally in heaven with grandma after all these years. I imagine the first thing she said upon greeting you..."what took you so long"? You made friends with every person you ever met, which is a very rare quality. Your Irish charm and genuine interest in people made you very much loved. Your memory will live with me forever. Love always and "onward to victory"...

Our friendship was profound and deep, and I will miss you dearly, my dear friend. My sincere condolences to Don and Florence, and to the many other Savages I never had the privilege of meeting. My solace now is that Dick is finally reunited with his beloved Eleanore. You will forever be in my heart, Dick. You made the world a better place for all 105 years you were in it.

It can only be imagined the greeting Dick received on Wed, Jan 30 as he arrived at the side of Our Lord. All
his Classmates from the Notre Dame Class of 1930, his Chicago friends and neighbors, all those Savage family who have preceded him in death, the thousands of Notre Dame men and women who have gotten to know him thru his many years of service to Our Lady's
Unvivrsity, his many professional/business friends...
wow, what a homecoming that must have been! Maybe when I complete my tour on earth, Dick and I will be able to "live" our desire to be neighbors, rather that telephone and mail communications that became
to challenging this past few months. I know he will be
aware and proud at his services as the Notre Dame Band and Glee Club perform the school's alma mater, and the Victory March. We can imagine him beaming!

At Mr. Savage's 100th birthday celebration, I realized and told him that, if I had a choice of fathers, he would be my second choice. I know my father welcomed him to heaven as an old friend and fellow-member of Our Lady of Mercy's Holy Name Society. I'll miss our occasional dinners out and, most of all, miss being in touch with a special friend. I already find myself asking you to ask God to take care of my special intentions.
