MARK MAHOWALD Obituary

Mark Edward Mahowald, age 81, passed away peacefully Saturday July 20, 2013. He is survived by his wife, Zoe; devoted father of John, Mary, Katherine, Mark and Paul. He is survived by brothers, Theodore and Anthony, and sister Dorothy. Loving grandfather of Sarah, Kyle, Brian, Jennifer, Matthew, Megan, Mark Robert and James. Mark was a distinguished Mathematician. After starting his career at General Electric, he then went to Xavier University. From there he spent a few years at Syracuse University until he took a position at Northwestern University in 1963 and never left. He had 144 publications, and collaborated with 76 co-authors on Algebraic Topology. He retired at 65, but continued to be very active in Math, and was still working at the University 2 days a week until he was hospitalized. He travelled to collaborate and give lectures throughout his career, and continued this into retirement. Mark was an avid sailor and racer on Lake Michigan for over 40 years and was instrumental in some of the handicapping systems used to calculate race results. He also enjoy golf in retirement and spend 7 winters in Florida living on a golf course. Funeral Services will be Friday July 26, 11:00 am at the Sheil Catholic Center, 2110 Sheridan Rd, Evanston. There will be reception immediately following the services. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the American Lung Association.

I will miss his knowing smile and just plain good humor. He was the face of homotopy theory for so many years.
