Annelies Podmajersky Obituary
Annelies Grace Podmajersky passed away September 28, 2013 after a full and beautiful life of 85 years. She leaves behind her husband of 57 years, John Podmajersky, Jr., daughter Lisa Podmajersky, and son John Podmajersky III as well as many loving family members and friends. Annelies' huge personality and presence live on in the hearts of many and in her enormous contributions to community and art in Chicago. Annelies was born to German immigrant parents in 1928, living in Milwaukee, WI until she married John in 1956 and moved to Chicago. Together, Annelies and John transformed the Pilsen East neighborhood where they lived into a vibrant artist community, an environment that supported several of Chicago's best-known artists of the past 50 years. Their innovative community featured unique work and living spaces as well as inspiring outdoor environments broadly revered as treasures and award winning in the City of Chicago. In 2001, the Mayor's Landscape Award Program honored Annelies with First Place for "Commercial Landscapes - Citywide", celebrating her passion and artistry in creating the hidden oases so beloved in Pilsen East. Annelies was also affectionately known as the "mayor of Pilsen" for the loyalty she inspired befriending tenants/ artists, keeping tabs on her husband's numerous remodeling projects throughout the neighborhood, and managing the financial side of the family business. Annelies was a passionate person who loved her family deeply. She was nurtured immensely by her love of nature and the artist community to which she and her husband devoted their lives. Annelies leaves behind an enormous legacy of love and generosity of spirit. She will be deeply missed. The family has created a donor advised fund with The Chicago Community Trust to accept donations in memory of Annelies. To make your tax-deductible contribution to the fund, please make checks payable to The Chicago Community Foundation and include "Annelies Podmajersky Memorial Fund" in the memo line of the check. Checks may be sent to The Chicago Community Trust, attn. Vanessa Johnson, 225 N. Michigan Ave., Suite 2200, Chicago, IL, 60601.
