Jim Blanco Obituary

Jim Louis Blanco died peacefully in his sleep on October 26, 2013. He was the faithful and much loved husband of Dianne Hayes Blanco for 43 years and a wonderful father to Dr. Laurie Jennifer Blanco and father-in-law to Dr. R. Todd Hurst. He was a devoted grandfather to Taylor Dianne and Emma Rose Hurst. They will always have fond memories of playing checkers and Zingo and learning to play softball and catch with their grandfather. He adored them from the moment they were put in his arms. All who knew him knew all about Taylor and Emma. Jim is survived by his brothers, Tim and Tom, his sister-in-law, Mary, and his niece Michelle and her husband Chuck Wasserstrom and their daughters, Nicole and Danielle. His sister-in-law, Virginia Keyes, his niece Kimberly and her husband, David Hergett, and their daughters, Lynsey and Emily, also survive him as well as his sister-in-law, Elisabeth Hayes, and his nieces, Annette, Gretchen and Lili, and their children, Sophie, Kelsey, Dallas and Tristan. He was preceded in death by his parents, Thomas and Lavonne Blanco, and his aunt, Nadine Marliere, who helped raise him when his mother became ill. His and his aunt's devotion to his mother was undisputed. Many were the nights he would interrupt a date with Dianne to go home to help get his mother into bed. Jim was a graduate of the University of Illinois at Urbana with a B.S. in political science and a J.D. from the University of Illinois School of Law. He practiced law at First Chicago, was a partner at Winston & Strawn, and ended his successful career as a Maguire Woods partner in Brussels, Belgium. His real calling emerged after he retired from law. Quietly he began a loving dedication to volunteer causes. He went to New Orleans twice with new-found friends at Fourth Presbyterian Church to build new homes for victims of Hurricane Katrina. He became a fixture at Monday Night Supper at Catholic Charities and was adept at making every dinner he supervised a success. He often drove the truck to get the food and make sure all was ready for the dinner. He volunteered for Friday Night Supper and it was not unusual for him to run over to the church to stuff envelopes or make sandwiches with his friends. The day he died he was looking forward to surprising the church with a new grill for their final picnic at its Chicago farm. He went from the mental regime of the law easily and happily to a more physical and satisfying employment helping others. Volunteering did not end at the church. He was an avid White Sox fan and in the last few years met a whole new group of friends volunteering through the White Sox Foundation to paint and clean up schools and parks in Chicago. Jim was a humble man who touched many people with his wit, his intelligence and his love. He will be sorely missed by his family and friends. In lieu of flowers, please remember Jim by either donations in memory of his mother to the Multiple Sclerosis Society or of a much loved minister and friend, Dana Ferguson, to Fourth Presbyterian Church, 126 E Chestnut, Chicago Illinois 60611. To honor Jim, we will hold a memorial service at Fourth Presbyterian Church at Michigan Avenue and Delaware Street in Chicago on Saturday, November 16 at 10:30am. Arrangements by CENTRAL CHAPEL, Lane-Moynihan Directors, Downtown Chicago. November 24, 2013

Diane, so sorry to hear of Jim's passing, because we all know it was way too soon. Jim and I worked together at First Chicago and became friends and social acquaintences for years, having many good laughs and fun with each other. Marilyn and I sincerely wish you and the entire Blanco Family the best that God and life can provide going forward.
Love always, Dick Fitzpatrick.

Dear Dianne ~

My heart broke today when I learned of Jim's passing! I was one of the many friends he made while he so proudly dedicated so much of his time with the White Sox Volunteer Corps! Always a friendly hello, always a warm smile, always had words of encouragement. I am honored I was able to serve side by side with Jim at so many volunteer events since 2009. He was a man who had such great character and integrity. My thoughts and prayers are with you and your entire family. He will be dearly missed. It was certainly a pleasure to know Jim! A true hero! I will look through my volunteer pictures to see if I have any of Jim!

Dear Diane
I remember with delight the 10 wonderful days I shared with you and Jim and others in France in 2010. I have often remembered my conversations with Jim around the communal table and our shared interest in the crime fiction novels of the library at the villa. You have lost your lifetime companion and I want to express my sympathy to you and to your family. Jim will be missed.

Dear Dianne,

Please accept my heartfelt sympathy over the loss of Jim. I knew Jim for only the past year, but feel I have lost a good friend. He was smart and funny and above all, kind! Although he wasn't much older than I, the thought occurred to me a couple of times when I was with him, "When I grow up, I'd like to be like Jim." He was so generous with his time and support-- a real inspiration to me. We all lost a great one! I'm so glad that I had the chance to know him.

jim will be missed that's for sure. during one of the outing i was given a task to help build shelfs, of course i didn't know how and had to follow his lead. i learned something that day that would stay with me for a lifetime, and that was jim would help if you were in need and not knowing me made no difference. i was honored to know him for the short time that i knew him. to celebrate you jim on opening day to make sure you are there i will wear your name on the back of my jersey! let's all remember jim this way and when i see you on opening day, let's remember jim! rob

Dear Diana and Family,
The last time I saw Jim was Volunteering at the Parkinsons run just 2 weeks before. As volunteers go, the word "dedicated" just isn't enough to describe him. He always put beyond 110% of himself into every project. With me, he always was eager and inquisitive about new and diferent projects that many people haven't yet heard of ( such as the valor games, we had a good talk about that while packing bread at the food depository). The Corps had a true volunteer warrior and champion in Jim. Rest assured he continues watching over all of us now.

My sincerest condolences on your loss, and my best wishes to all of Jim's family.
