Mary V. Fraime-Barker

1927 - 2013 | Obituary Condolences
Mary V. Fraime-Barker Obituary
A beloved mother, Mary Virginia Fraime-Barker (nee Cooper), of Hometown, passed away Wednesday, Dec. 18 at age 86. Nicknamed "Bootsie," Mary sacrificed throughout her life for her family and taught her five children and more than 50 grandchildren over several generations the importance of hard work, love, and personal courage. Born Jan. 8, 1927 in McHenry, Kentucky, Mary was the original coal miner's daughter. One day while working for a preacher's family, a young man from across a neighbor's fence spotted the teenage Mary and announced at first sight that she would be his bride. She married that man, Jesse Fraime, within months. The young mother persevered after her husband was deployed in the Korean War, as a medic, until the couple was reunited. They moved their children 60 years ago to Chicago. Mary worked hard to help provide for her family, including as a valued Sears, Roebuck and Co. employee. She was preceded in death by her husband, Jesse Fraime, and, later, husband Ancil "Tommy" Barker. Mary, formerly of Cicero, was the devoted mother of the late Larry (Karen) Fraime, and Patricia (Ken Fanella) Gutowski; Joe (Sharon) Fraime; Jesse (Diane) Fraime Jr. and James Fraime Sr. As a testament to their devotion, her four surviving children took constant care of their bedridden mother in her home until her final days through years of illness. Mary had many talents, including southern cooking, especially corn bread, and loved many people and things, including Elvis, and her faithful dog Benji. She will be reunited for Christmas with her late parents, William and Clara Dean Cooper, and three late siblings, William Jr., Hilda Mae and Junior. Until the end, Mary was quick witted, sharp and beautiful. She will be forever missed, but her legacy endures through the many lives she made possible and the lessons she taught. The funeral service is 10 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 21 at Sourek & Sons Funeral Home, 5645 W. 35th St., Cicero, IL. Interment will follow at Oakridge Glen Oaks Cemetery in Hillside. Visitation is 3 to 9 p.m. Friday, Dec. 20 at the funeral home. For more information, call (708) 652-6661.
