Eugene Filip Obituary
icon Eugene C. (Gene) Filip, died January 1st in Portland, Oregon. Born and raised in Chicago, he spent 43 years working for the Tribune and WGN, starting as a copy boy and working up to News and Public Affairs Director for both radio and television. He was a decorated WWII veteran who served as a bombardier on B-24s in the South Pacific where he was awarded the Silver Star, 2 Purple Hearts and the Air Medal. Upon retirement, he and his wife of sixty years, Dorothy (McKinley) moved to Portland, Oregon where she grew up. Dorothy was a US Navy nurse when they met in Australia in 1943. She preceded him in death by six years. Gene is survived by two sons, Roger (Suzanne) of Wheaton, IL and Dan (Judy) of Olympia, WA. Also surviving are four grandchildren and six great grandchildren. Interment will be in Oregon.
