Joseph Arns Obituary
icon Joseph F. Arns, 89, retired Zenith Electronics Corporation Executive and World War II a much decorated war hero. The veteran died after a courageous battle with cancer at his home in Park Ridge on Wednesday, January 15, 2014. Born in Eagle River Wisconsin (as he liked to point out in a log cabin) on September 11, 1924. Joe grew up on Chicago's Northwest side where he attended: St. Bartholomew's Grammar School, St. Mel and Carl Schurz High Schools. After the war, he earned his college degree from Loyola University. In 1947, Joe married Marie J. Odell. They were blessed with twelve children and "Boompa" to twenty-five grandchildren and fifteen great-grandchildren. Starting in the 1950's Joe and his family lived in Edison Park for 25 years, settling in Park Ridge in the mid 1970's. Joe served in World War II as a pilot in the 14th Air Force as a "Flying Tiger" in China. He flew 256 combat missions in China, Burma and India, which included some missions as a "Hump Pilot." For combat military service Joe was awarded many medals and military citations from both the US and China governments, including two distinguished Flying Crosses, three Air Medals, the Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal with four Battle Stars, a China Memorial Medal, Presidential Unit Citation, and numerous other military awards. Joe was employed by Zenith Electronic Corporation for 36 years retiring in 1988 as Assistant Treasurer of the Parent Company. He also held various positions as Treasurer, Vice President, and Secretary of some of Zenith's subsidiaries. Joe's biggest joy and love in life was his wife, his children, their spouses, his grandchildren, and great grandchildren. Joe was a beloved husband to the late Marie "Tootsie" nee Odell. Loving father of Barb (Jim) Ballan, Sally Evans (Will) Willis , Mary (Terry) Taraszka, Linda (Larry) Attore, Jim (MaryLou), Sandy (Ron) Hope, Joanie (Cory) Linnane, Janet (Don) James, Ann (Steve) Stramaglio, Julie (Matt) Ivers; and the late Mary, Joe Jr. (Colleen). Taps will be sounded at Joe's gravesite for it was his wish. He always said when his gang hears Taps there won't be a dry eye among them. God Bless Them. Visitation Friday, January 17, from 3 to 9 pm at Cumberland Chapels (FRIEL FUNERAL DIRECTORS) 8300 W. Lawrence Ave., Norridge. Funeral Saturday, 8:45 am from the funeral home and will then proceed to St. Stephen Protomartyr Church , Des Plaines Mass 10 am. Interment with Military Honors, All Saints Cemetery.
