John Fleming Obituary
John H. Fleming, 75, of Palm Springs, CA, passed away suddenly on February 10, 2014. John was born and raised in Des Moines, IA, the only son of Lela Mae and "Boots" Fleming, founders and owners of "Peggy's Tavern", an icon of student life near the campus of Drake University. John graduated from the hotel-restaurant program at Michigan State University in 1961 and served in the Navy. This led to his first job as food and beverage flight services manager with Pan American World Airways. The next stop was the "21 Club." Here, John's expertise, style and contacts took him to Chicago in 1976, creating Cricket's at the Tremont Hotel, the first-ever "21 Club" -managed eatery outside New York. Successes and new opportunities followed: Metro in 1982, the former Chicago site of Maxim's de Paris, The Mansion on Turtle Creek in Dallas, Brennan's in Atlanta, Caesar's Palace in Las Vegas and the Helmsley Palace in New York City. John's retirement years in Palm Springs allowed him to enjoy activities with the Palm Springs Film Festival and a new community of friends. John, a true gentleman, will be fondly remembered and deeply missed by many.
