Irma Reiner Obituary

Irma Ruth Moses Reiner, Ph.D., age 92, died peacefully on Friday, April 4th, 2014. Born March 3rd, 1922, in Newburgh, NY to Marie Alderman and Michael Moses, J.D., she had resided for 66 years in Urbana, IL. Much-loved mother of sons David Reiner of Lexington, MA, and Peter Reiner of Chicago, IL, and caring mother-in-law to their spouses Cynthia Eid and Diane Morean, respectively, she is survived by grandsons Andy Eid Reiner, Eric Eid-Reiner, and Daniel McNeill Reiner; by sister Estelle Hirsch; and by 6 nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her sister Shirley Seralnick and by her loving husband of 38 years, Prof. Irving Reiner (d. 1986). Irma Reiner earned both undergraduate and doctoral degrees from Cornell University, and was inducted into Phi Beta Kappa in her junior year. She taught briefly at Temple University, and was a highly respected Professor of Mathematics at the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign. She was blindingly smart, compassionate, empathic, gentle, and supportive, and will be greatly missed by her family and many friends. She loved international and domestic travel, mountain scenery, wildflowers, art, music, drama, literature, and above all her family. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to honor Irma Reiner be given to the Irving Reiner Memorial Fund at the Department of Mathematics, University of Illinois at http://www.math.illinois.edu/gifts/Contribution_Form.pdf
