Hampden Swift Obituary

Hampden Mepham Swift passed away peacefully on May 26th, 2014, at his home in Lake Forest, Illinois. Born in St. Louis, Missouri on April 23rd 1915, to John Staples Swift and Jessie Mae Swift. Devoted and loving husband of Margaret Pauline Muckerman who celebrated life with their 13 children and 23 grandchildren. Growing up in St. Louis, Missouri, he attended St. Louis Country Day School where he was the captain of both the baseball and football teams. He attended Yale University at the age of 16, graduated in the Class of 1936, and started his career. He was a scratch golfer with various club championships to his name and an outstanding bridge player who knew how to finesse his game. He was a superb mentor in every way. He always called a situation like it was and his advice was always true. He married Margaret P. Muckerman on February 3rd, 1951, in St. Louis, Missouri. He was made president of the John S. Swift Co., Inc. after his father John S. Swift retired in 1949. He and Margaret moved with their family of four children to Chicago, Illinois in 1958, at the request of his father who needed him to keep the Chicago printing and binding operation running with the various publishers of railroad tariffs. In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to St. Michael the Archangel Regional Academy, 1170 Bay View Road, Petoskey, Michigan 49770. Services are private and interment will be in Lake Forest Cemetery, Lake Forest, Illinois.

My sincere condolences to the entire Swift family. I was a customer of the John Swift Company and have only the best memories of a very honest and good man. His son John was my immediate interface with the business. However his Dad was always there as well. Teletype Corporation was a better place because of Hampden Swift.
