Michael Bachmann Obituary

The world is a better place because of the contributions of Mike Bachmann. Born in Salem, Illinois on July 17, 1940, Mike died suddenly of a heart attack in Montreal, Canada on September 7, 2014. Mike figured he was destined to run the family furniture store. But his summers at Camp Highlands for Boys in Sayner, Wisconsin changed all that. Starting when he was 10 years old, Mike attended Camp Highlands every summer for the rest of his life. When he was a student at Grinnell College, he decided that he wanted a life of camp - so he became a teacher, which would afford him his summers off, which would allow him to pursue his dream of running Camp Highlands. It was at Highlands that he met the love of his life, Sharon Nothdurft, who was at camp because her father was a counselor there. They were married June 14, 1964 and just this past summer celebrated their 50th anniversary. Together they lived in Western Springs, where Mike went on to work at a number of fantastic schools; Ideal Elementary, Spring Avenue, Avery-Coonley, and finally the College of DuPage, where he was chair of the education department. Mike was an active leader at the Theater of Western Springs and the First Congregational Church of Western Springs. He and Sharon have three children, who now have children of their own. Tim and Carol Bachmann live in San Anselmo, California with their son, Lukas; Laura and Jose Cubillos live in Park City, Utah with their children, Mateo and Esperanza; and Andy and Tracy Bachmann live in Gainesville, Florida with their children, Judah, Stella and Remy. He was an incredible father and outstanding grandfather, never one to deny a chocolate chip cookie or a motorboat ride. Mike also has a brother, John Bachmann, who lives in Charleston, South Carolina. Mike's lasting legacy though his directorship of Camp Highlands is an incredible thing to behold. Loving tributes from Highlands friends around the world have strewn in, declaring Mike Bachmann to being one of the most influential, considerate, generous and worthwhile men the world has ever known - just what he was. We are deeply saddened that he took the left turn to heaven instead of the right to Nova Scotia. He will always be loved and missed, and his spirit will live on through others and Camp Highlands for Boys. We have established a campership fund in his name so that any kid who wants to can experience the magic of camp. Donations can be made to the American Camping Association of Illinois, c/o the Mike Bachmann Campership Fund, 5 South Wabash Avenue, Suite 1406, Chicago, IL 60603-3104. All donations are tax deductible. A memorial service and reception will be held this Saturday, September 13th at 1PM at the First Congregational Church of Western Springs, Illinois: 1106 Chestnut Street.

My condolences to the Bachman family. I was fortunate enough to be a student of Mr Bachman's when he taught 6th grade at Ideal Elementary. He has had a lasting influence on my life. He made learning enjoyable whiile also encouraging and challenging his students to learn more, a rare ability.

I am so sorry to hear of Michael's death. Even as a 12-year-old, I recognized a great teacher who taught us to think critically and who respected each of us as an individual. Forty-seven years later, I still think of him the same way. One of my best memories of our classroom at Ideal School was listening to him read Agatha Christie and asking us all to vote each day on "who done it." I am very sorry for your loss. I hope you can take comfort in the wonderful legacy of learning that he leaves.

I never had the honor of attending Camp Highlands, but I did meet mike on more than one occasion. My Aunt and Uncle owned the resort next to Camp Highlands and I visited the camp many TIMES as I spent my high school and college summers working at the resort. I did have the privilege of work at the camp in the summer of 1967 when I worked as the assistant cook. It was a fun and very informative summer for me and Mike and Sharon were a big part of that experience.

Over the years I have enjoyed watching the camp from a distance as I now enjoy retirement in my home on Plum Lake and close to many great memories from my youth.

Mike will be missed by countless kids, now grown adults shaped by their days at Camp Highlands and thanks to Mike's efforts.

Our son Patrick has thoroughly enjoyed attending and now working as a staff member of Camp Highlands. It was obvious from the beginning that Mike's personal touch is what makes it so special. He has affected hundreds in many positive ways and will be truly missed. We are fortunate to have known him.

Thank you, Mike, and all of the Highlands Staff for all that you have done to make camp a very special place for boys and their families. Evan (and so many others in our family) loved his time at camp and it will always leave an indelible mark on our lives. Mike was a very special person and I will really miss seeing him along Plum Lake - especially during the Steeplechase - my favorite event! Love to the whole family, Emily Winter

Sharon and the family-
I was a camper back in the late 70's, and my own son is thinking of sleep-away camp for next summer. It's been wonderful telling him stories of Highlands and reliving my past through those stories. I'm looking forward to seeing Camp and Plum Lake next summer after so many years, but it will be bitter sweet to miss seeing Mike again.
Few people in this world truly leave a legacy. Mike did.

Mike was my counselor at Highlands in 1966 and was one of the most important role models in my life. What he built (along with Bob, Unc, Tony, Snow, and other Camp Highland luminaries) has impacted generations and thousands of young men--including our sons Chris and Alex. Sharon, Mike lives on in all of us Highlanders eternally.

deepest condolences,

Saw Mike a few summers back, sitting in the office, doing his fine work of editing the summer's photographs. Camp was a week over, he looked up at me, paused 3 seconds, and said "one of Butch's guy". He was, of course, right on. Hadn't seen him in 25 years and he immediately connected, amazing. Such a great man and a timeless leader, condolences to his fine family and the extended Highlands community. Certainly a lock for the Camp Highlands Rushmore.God Bless

Apparently, God needed a camp director, and felt Mike was best for the job. Too soon for all of us, but what a great job to have! Camp Director in Heaven.

Laura and Jose
I am so sorry for the loss of your father. Although, I only met him once at Park City Academy, he was so chatty with me and -so loving and nurturing in a "dad" and "poppi" way it reminded me of my dad also from the midwest. I am so sorry for your loss and shocking news. We will be thinking and praying for your family.
