I met you at Jewel and knew you before you blossomed into Brother Mike. I want to thank you for the four years of great memories. Poetry was your talent and it is amazing to see how many people you have touched. God has a wonderful angel now and I know you will continue to watch over your family and loved ones. We first met at Woodson School and you became my assistant while there. What a professional, spiritual friendship we had for each other and trust was at the forefront! Our big sistah/ little brotha bond was one of the greatest reasons to be at Woodson. Our colleagues admired it. I followed your talented self to many venues and each time was hittn' You're just a beautiful brother and I know where you are. Your natural talent will keep Heaven cheering for more!! No doubt! My most sincere condolences to the immediate and extended family of Brother Mike Hawkins. The city of Chicago, and the world on the whole, is a better place because of the countless lives he inspired, and the visionary work he achieved while living. Brother Mike was beloved by many. Those who held him dear will neither forget him nor allow his life's work to cease with his untimely passing. Brother Mike's legacy is one of creative expression, self-determination, inspiration through education, and community development. "Power to the people.... Right on!"

Brother Mike was one of those rare people who could make everyone he came in contact with, rise to a higher level, to be a more generous person and to enjoy life. Brother Mike lives on in all of us who loved him.
