Dr. Dolores Gruen

Dr. Dolores C. Gruen, nee Colen, 90, passed away peacefully surrounded by family on March 19, 2015. Dearly cherished by the love of her life and husband of 66 years, Dr. Dieter M. Gruen. Loving mother of Erica (fiancé Richard Pravda) Gruen, Karen ( Michael) Ostrov and Jeffery (Shelley) Gruen. Proud grandmother of Daniel (Stephanie) Ostrov and Miriam (fiance Dave Herrmann) Ostrov, Anna Levy, Lev and Micah Pravda, Zoe, Aleya and Benjamin Gruen. Deeply beloved great-aunt, aunt and cousin to many. Daughter of the late Harry and Rose Shanker Colen, predeceased by brothers Albert and Sidney. Always deflecting praise, she rejoiced in the accomplishments of her husband and family - taking avid interest in every detail - and those of the many thousands of children, parents, teachers, and staff whose lives she deeply affected as a pioneering school psychologist and psychotherapist for over 50 years. All who knew her will remember her for her irreplaceable élan, penetrating intelligence, and indefatigable interest in everyone and everything around her. Utterly practical, intensely idealistic, furiously honest, wise and funny, generous and kind, devoted to living life with purpose and optimism to the very last. She set the standard and her legacy of love lives on. May her memory be for a blessing. Interment Westlawn Cemetery in Norridge. In lieu of flowers, memorials in her name may be made to the Downers Grove Public Library.
