Steven Searle Obituary

"One more chapter." When Steven's son, Dixon, was a boy, Steven would read to him every night - mostly "Hardy Boys" books - and because the boy was not tired and also wanted to know what would happen next, he would often ask for "one more chapter." More often than not, the father would oblige. Sadly, on August 25, 2015, the story of Steven's life came to a close after many chapters - some happy, some sad, but all of them written in his own unique style. As much as his family and friends might wish for "one more chapter," they will have to console themselves with the vibrant ones already committed to paper. A lifelong Chicagoan (and Air Force veteran), Steven worked for Northeastern Illinois University for over 30 years before retiring in 2012. His core passions included his Buddhist practice, blogging on politics and religion, playing and teaching chess, and going out to see foreign and independent films. Steven is survived by his son Dixon, daughter-in-law Jaime, sister Laurie, brother Roger, and ex-wife Mary. He was a proud grandfather to the late Drazan Anthony and Damon Patrick. Steven will be cremated, per his wishes, and the family plans to hold a private memorial service. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to Steven's favorite charity, the United Negro College Fund.

Joanie and I were friends of his for many years - he was a wonderful co-worker (he ran AV's call center at NEIU when I was a technician there) and I loved our conversations and time together. Steve will be missed by many. I will personally miss Steve's warm and sincere smile as well as his honest and forthright nature. My thoughts and prayers are with his son, who he quite often spoke of with deep felt affection and proudness, as well as the rest of his family. May you all find comfort in knowing he is released from any pain and in God's gentle hands.

I always loved that my brother Steve was a writer, because it left me with volumes of email letters and novel-sized blogs. I'm equally blessed that his son Dixon inherited that trait. He didn't just write an obit, he wrote a loving tribute that captured Steve's essence. Steve appreciated that his life was a gift and lived it without regrets. I am so honored that he shared his gift with me and his family right up to the end. Rest in peace "TeeDa"
