Dr. Barbara & Family
I have many memories of Papa. It has been a pleasure working & being with the family during many Thanksgiving Holiday dinners. Working along side Dr. Barbara as we prepared a feast.
Thanksgivings or any event that I help you with will never really be the same. I was fortunate enough to be introduced to you and the family during his life time. A memory and moments I will cherish for the rest of my life.
From all the Love, laughter and even quiet moments, I am honored to be apart of your lives. Now working as a chef in San Francisco, where I was when I found out,
I can't wait to come back whenever you need me to help you with any event you may be hosting.
Much Love until we meet again
Take Care
Warm Regards

As the supervisor of my first analytic control case at the Chicago Institute for Psychoanalysis, Mark Berger was among the most enlightening influences in the course of my analytic training. He combined deep understanding of tradition, including a scholarly mastery of Freud, with independent critical thinking and improvisational creativity. He did not hesitate to depart from convention when he thought my relationship with my patient would benefit along with associated analytic work. A published paper was born of my work with this patient, and I feel Mark's inspiration and support had a lot to do with that thinking and that writing. Mark was always quietly empathic and yet challenging. I enjoyed every weekly meeting with him spanning more than 5 years: his sense of humor, his respectful involvement, and his thoughtful wisdom. He has always been and always will be an affirming presence in my life, even as I join so many others in sadly mourning his passing.

It has been my pleasure to have known Dr. Berger and his family for these past 35 years as his barber. I always looked forward to seeing him and enjoyed our diverse conversations. Dr. Berger will be missed by all who knew him. My deepest condolences to his family.

To Dr. Barbara Berger and Family:
I am deeply, deeply sorry to hear about your heartbreaking loss. I will always treasure Mark for his brilliance, quiet dignity and steadfastness, well-chosen words, our shared delight in chocolate, coffee, books and films, and the many, irreplaceable gifts of understanding he has given me. At our last time together just mere days ago (so painfully unaware that it would be our last moment), we were taking in his beautiful view of Millennium Park. I was teasing him that I was so envious of that view and that even the latticed monstrosity of Pritzker Pavilion had grown on me. He told me that he had seen a lot of changes over the years just outside that window. My last memory of him is gazing out that window: wise, full of wonder, nostalgic. Mark was no mere teacher but as Robert Frost once stated "an awakener" to so many views to be seen, touched, considered, and felt. He was the most important mentor of my life, and I will never forget him.
With Heartfelt and Deepest Sympathy,
Kimberly Eve Merenkov, M.D.

I remember going to Yizkor services with Mark and Jane on Yom Kippur, how calmly he drove even though we were all tired, cranky, and hungrily anticipating Barbara's matzah ball soup. May his memory be a blessing.

I have not seen or communicated with Mark for over 26 years, but I sure do have fond memories of being
welcomed into his home when I used to visit Lance, Brian and Howie who all attended Camp Horseshoe
where I worked for many summers. Those "boys" sure did benefit by having Mark has their step dad.
I cherish the memories of many great meals shared with Mark, Barbara and the boys.
Fondly,
Steve Byrd
