Hans Hasen Obituary

Hans Hasen of Largo, Florida, died July 17, 2016. A 32-year resident of Oak Brook, Illinois, and 12-year resident of Hinsdale, Illinois, Mr. Hasen was born February 10, 1924, in Bandung, Java, Dutch East Indies (now Indonesia), to Alexander Hasenstab and Irene Kelling Hasenstab. In 1950, he graduated from the University of Sydney, Australia, with a Bachelor of Civil Engineering degree. A registered Professional Engineer and registered Structural Engineer, he enjoyed a long career in Consulting Engineering as a designer, rising to Vice President. For 55 years he was associated with the Harza Engineering Co., Inc., of Chicago (now MWH, Montgomery Watson Harza,). Twenty years were spent in building the Guri Hydroelectric Project in Venezuela. In 1985, he was decorated by the Venezuelan government for his work on Guri Dam. Other projects in the United States and the world included projects in Iceland, the Dominican Republic, El Salvador, and on the Columbia River in Washington State. He was a member of the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE), the National Society of Professional Engineers (NSPE), and the United States Committee on Large Dams. During World War II he spent 3 years as a prisoner of war of the Japanese. After WWII he lived in Wahroonga, New South Wales, Australia, emigrating to the U. S. in 1951. He was naturalized as a U.S. citizen in 1956. He was a member of The Dutch Club of Chicago. He is survived by his wife, June, and their adult children: Michael (Susan) of Sugar Land, TX; Mark of Clearwater, FL; Laura Elliott of CA; and Susan Sinz (Dr. Mark T.) of Clearwater, FL; and six grandchildren: Alexander Hasen, Candice Elliott, Margaux Elliott, Rachel Sinz, Emily Sinz and Katie Sinz; and a brother, Rainer, of Seattle, WA. He was an active community leader in La Grange Park where he founded the Village Field Club (a swimming pool facility), and where he also served as a Village Trustee on the Village Board of the Village of La Grange Park, IL. He also served for five years on the Oak Brook Zoning Board of Appeals during his 32-year residence in Oak Brook, IL. He served for nine years as a Member of the Board of Directors of the Graue Mill Homeowners Association of Hinsdale, IL. Hans served as a member of the City of Largo, FL, Code Enforcement Board. A member of Christ Church of Oak Brook since July, 1971, he was very active in its Nehemiah Ministry. Interment in Oak Brook, IL, will be private. Any donations in his name may be made to The Salvation Army.
