Allan Forbes(1926 - 2013)

ALLAN FORBES Allan Edward Forbes, 86, died Sunday April 28, 2013 in Chico, Calif. He was born July 15, 1926 in San Francisco, Calif. to Catherine O'Sullivan and Edward Forbes. Allan was raised and educated in the Bay Area. He attended Stanford where he received his B.A., M.A., and his P.H.D. He moved to Chico in 1948 and was employed at then Chico State College as an Assistant Professor in Speech and Drama. During his tenure at CSU, Chico he established the Speech Pathology Program, and chaired this department for 21 years. Allan later became the Associate Vice President for Academic Affairs, Vice President of Administration, and Executive Vice President, before ending his 38 year career at CSU, Chico in 1986. Allan was a Butte County Planning Commissioner, a former Executive Director of the Downtown Business Association, a Butte College Trustee for 21 years, and a member of the Calif. State Library Board for 20 years. Allan contributed to his community through his membership in Chico Rotary Club, Chico Community Concert Association, Children's Home Society, and the Chico Chamber of Commerce. Allan received vast recognition for his commitment to education, the community, and the Catholic Church. Among his many honors, he was awarded the Chico Rotary Club Paul Harris Award on three different occasions, the Chico Chamber of Commerce Pat Lappin Award, the Butte College Meritorious Service Award, the Hall of Honors University Emeritus and Retired Faculty Associate Award, and the Turner Prize for Excellence in the Arts. He was honored in Who's Who in American Education, American Men of Science, and served as a Director of American Scholars. The Catholic Church recognized his service through an award of Knight by the Papal Order of Saint Gregory. Survivors include two daughters, Mary Ann Michelon of Napa and Jennifer Macarthy of Chico; four grandchildren, Katie and Matthew Michelon and Alaina and Logan Macarthy. Allan will be remembered as a loving father, grandfather and friend. A Rosary will be held Thursday evening, May 9, 2013 at 7:00 p.m., at Newton-Bracewell Chico Funeral Home. A Mass of Christian Burial will take place at 11:00 a.m., Friday, May 10, 2013 at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Chico. Burial will follow the Mass at Glen Oaks Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made to either the North State Symphony or the Janet Turner Memorial Scholarship Fund in care of the funeral home.
