Clyde L. (Leroy) Cartwright(1923 - 2013)

CLYDE L CARTWRIGHT Gently departed this life December 11th, 2013 at Enloe Hospital surrounded by family and friends. Leroy was born October 1, 1923 in Dayton, California on the family farm established in 1863. He was the 4th of 7 children born to Eunice and Jessie Cartwright. Leroy is survived by his wife of 66 years, Rosalie, Son and daughter- in -law Dr. Lyle & Mrs. Donna rae Cartwright, brother Wayne Cartwright and sister Ann (Cartwright) Terrell. Leroy also raised his sister Lois (Cartwright) Sitnik's four children upon her death in 1970, Roger Sitnik, Gary Sitnik, Nancy (Sitnik) Byrne, and Monya (Sitnik) Robicheau. He is also survived by his 7 Grand kids, Sheena Cartwright. Nathan, Shane, and Megan Byrne. Austin, Jenna, and Bailee Robicheau, as well as 5 Great -grand kids. Leroy attended the one-room school in Dayton, Calif. He went on to graduate from Durham High School in 1941. Leroy served in World War II from 1942 to 1945 in the 428th and 947th Anti Aircraft Artillery. He manning a 90mm gun on Canton Island, Iwo Jima, and Saipan. Leroy was a prominent member of the Dayton farming community. In the early days he farmed wheat, barley, milo, and beans; later moving into almonds. He was a founding member of the North State Hulling Co-Op, a member of the Blue Diamond Almond Growers, the Aqua Alliance, the Butte Co Historical Society, and the Durham American Legion. Graveside services will be held at the Dayton cemetery December 22, at 11:30 a.m. followed by a family and friends potluck at the Durham Veterans Memorial Hall, 9319 Midway Durham, Ca. He will be missed by all. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Durham Volunteer Fire Dept.
