JAMES D. CRABTREE James David Crabtree was born in Oroville on April 23, 1926 and passed away in Oroville on April 19, 2013, having lived 80 of his 87 years in Oroville, CA. "Jim" attacked everything he did with strength and conviction. At only 5'7" he led the Oroville Tigers to championship victory as their star quarterback in 1943, winning him a football Scholarship to UOP where he studied fire science. As volunteer fireman
for El Medio Fire Dept for 42 years, he garnered the respect and admiration of all those who served with him. He acted as drill instructor for El Medio for many years and was a commissioner on the El Medio District Board from 1977-1985. The fires and emergency calls he responded to are innumerable and include some of the largest in the history of this area. His main livelihood was as a lumber grader, first at High Sierra Pine Mill and later, after a short stint with Aerojet General in Sacramento, at Las Plumas Lumber Co. for a total of 42 years. But to the end, Jim considered among his proudest roles that of being one of 18 charter members of Grace Baptist Church which was founded by the group in 1945. He served as trustee, Training Union and Sunday School teacher, choir member and finance committee member among other duties. Near the end he stated, "The church has been my life." Jim shared that life with his wife, Beverly Marie Crabtree. They would have been married sixty years next month. James Crabtree leaves behind his wife, Beverly, daughters Cherylene Titus of Gold Beach, Oregon, and Jan Hyland of Vacaville, California and son, David Crabiree of Oroville as well as seven grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren. Preceding him in death were his parents, Albert J. and Myrtle Crabtree and sisters, Virginia Sedwick and Kathryn Briggs. The overwhelming support of a multitude of family and friends who visited and sent cards and flowers over the last few weeks of Jim's life is greatly appreciated by the immediate family. Arrangements are by Scheer Memorial Chapel. Services will be held at Grace Baptist Church, 3646 Oro Dam Blvd. East, Oroville, CA on Friday, April 26 at 11:00 a. m. with viewing one hour prior to service. Internment follows at Memorial Park Cemetery, 5646 Lincoln Blvd., Oroville. Attendees will be served luncheon at Grace Baptist Church following internment. The family requests donations be made to Grace Baptist Church in lieu of flowers.
