ELLIS EUGENE BARKLOW Ellis Barklow passed away at his home at the Courtyard at Little Chico Creek, Chico, on Saturday March 16, 2013 with family at his side. He was born in Covina, California on September 18, 1926 to Jessie L. Barklow and Roxa L. Barklow. Graduating from Covina High School in 1944, he joined the U.S. Navy at age 17 and served from 1944-1946 during World War II in the Asiatic Pacific Theater as a gunners mate in the Armed Guard. After the war, he worked for Safeway in Southern California for 47 years from 1946 to 1993 and was a member of So. Cal. UFCW Local 1428 and Local 770. Ellis married Patsy Lloyd Martens in 1976 in Southern California and they moved to Chico in 1993. He enjoyed being with family, visiting with neighbors, woodworking, tending his roses, working in stained glass, and walking. He was a very friendly and kind person and always enjoyed a good conversation. After Pat died in 2006, his main activity was his woodworking which he gave away to friends, family, neighbors, and his doctors. Two and a half years ago when he was no longer able to live by himself at home, he moved into the Courtyard at Little Chico Creek. Ellis continued to enjoy his life and developed special friendships with the wonderful staff members from Courtyard. He also continued his hobby of woodworking and finished his last project just days before his passing. In spite of serious health challenges, he took enjoyment just sitting in his favorite chair and watching the birds outside his window. He was always thrilled to see all visitors and enjoyed "hugs" from everyone. His laugh and smile will always be remembered by all who knew him, and we will miss him greatly. Ellis is pre-deceased by his parents, Jessie L. Barklow and Roxa L. Barklow, his sister, Wilma Goodgion, and wife, Patsy Barklow. He is survived by his stepdaughter and son-in-law Nancy and Gary Arnet of Chico, his sons and daughter-in-laws Jim Barklow of Washington, David and Theresa Barklow of Southern California, Steven and Vickie Barklow of Southern California, his grandchildren, Sonja Arnet Pieper, Brian Arnet, Kyle Arnet, Michelle Barklow Bolton, Kelsey Barklow De Severen, Seth Barklow, Amanda Barklow Munoz, Matthew Barklow, and great-grandsons, Brendan and Drew.
