GLADYS ALBERTA BENZIE
March 10, 1916-Feb. 5, 2007
Gladys Alberta Benzie, age 90, of Kenmore, Wash., died Monday, Feb. 5, 2007.
Gladys was born in Waubay, S.D. on March 10, 1916. She graduated in nursing from The General Hospital of Everett in 1939. In 1940 she joined the American Red Cross at Fort Lewis where she worked for one year. When World War II broke out in 1941 she enlisted in the Army Nurse Corps and it took her all over the world. She worked on the front lines during the Korean War and attained the rank of Major.
She met her future husband, Major Robert Benzie at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. They were married at Edwards Air Force Base in California. After retirement from the service, they made their home in Paradise, Calif. in the late 1950s. Gladys worked as an R.N. at Rheingans Hospital in Paradise then Enloe Hospital in Chico until her retirement. She and her husband spent summers in their Airstream trailer, traveling to Montana, where they enjoyed fishing. After her husband passed away in 1988, she continued to live in Paradise. In 2000 she moved to Kenmore, Wash. to be near her sisters. She loved going salmon fishing in Alaska with her family. She went on many Elderhostel trips. Gladys loved learning and the opera. She also became interested in baseball and was a fan of the Seattle Mariners.
Gladys was a loving person and well liked by everyone. She was one of nine children.
Gladys is survived by one brother Marvin Theiss of Santa Rosa, Calif.; and four sisters, Arlene Runciman of Seattle, Wash., Pearl Perry of Bothell, Wash., Evelyn Eckstrom of Yakima, Wash., and Lydia Repp of Snohomish, Wash.
A Memorial Service was held for her family in Washington.
The Graveside Services with full military honors will be held at 10 a.m., Friday, Feb. 16, 2007, at Paradise Cemetery.
