JOHN EDWIN LUCAS On November 7th, 2013 John Edwin Lucas, 66, peacefully passed away from cancer at Chico Windsor Care Center. John was born on February 12th, 1947 in Oakland, CA to Robert Swan Lucas and Joyce Lorraine Hailer. John graduated from High School and went into the U.S. Marine Corps where he served time in Vietnam. Upon returning to the states, he held a variety of jobs including firefighting and was a chef at an alcohol rehabilitation center. John worked for Butler Amusement Company as a "carney man", as he called it, for over fifteen years. It is hard to mention a town or city that John had not been in or gone through during his travels with Butler Amusement Company. John never married and lost track of any living relatives, including an older brother, Robert Swan Lucas, JR. After settling in Chico in the late '80's, John became homeless and for the most part, his only income was recycling cans. He became well known on the college campus as "John the can man". In 1994, he became wheelchair dependent due to the losing of his left leg after a stroke. With the help of caring people and friends, most notably Patty Darr, housing was found and financial aid was obtained so that John would never be homeless again. Although John was a loner, he will be missed by those who knew him best. No memorial service is planned. Donations in memory of John and his cat Sam may be sent to the Chico Cat Coalition P0 Box 4214, Chico, CA 95927. To view the obituary or share your memories of John, go online to NewtonBracewell.com.
