Nils Helsing Obituary
NILS HELSING Born in Vexala, Finland to Albert and Elna Helsing, the family moved to San Francisco in 1946. Young Nils rode his bike daily on the city streetsquickly learning the neighborhoods and his new language. He was an avid 49er fan as a teenager, attending games at Kezar Stadium in the 1950's. He graduated from Sequoia High School in 1955, and soon after was among the first 500 Hewlett-Packard employees, eventually becoming a Machinist Supervisor. Nils married Britta Bjork in 1962 and they moved into a shared duplex in Redwood City that he helped construct with his dad. Like Albert, he was skilled with his hands and could excel at activities that required dexteritybe it carpentry or rebuilding cars, and he was a patient teacher of those skills to his sons. Nils was passionate about music and excelled at the accordion as a youthmaking his violinist father proud. He was an avid boater and fisherman and considered a day of salmon fishing with his dad and sons out of the Golden Gate to be a day perfectly spent. In his late teens he took to the slopes of the new Tahoe ski resorts with his friendsdeveloping perfect skiing form. As a loving father, Nils often went camping with his family and he had just begun a week vacation with his son Robert, when he died from an aneurysm in his beloved Lake Tahoe. He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Britta, sons Robert and James, sister Alice Chapman, loving in-laws, nieces, nephews and a host of long-time friends.
