RANDOLPH J. "RANDY" SAUTNER
1942 - 2012
Randy was born in Milwaukee, Wis., in 1942, and moved with his family to Carmichael, Calif., where he graduated from El Camino High School in 1960. Randy graduated from the California Maritime Academy, Vallejo in 1964 with a degree in Marine Engineering. He traveled the world as Chief and Port Engineer for American President Lines, Ltd. who also commissioned Randy to author the book American Mail Lines, A Historical Reference.
Randy was a Senior Building Engineer for the City and County of San Francisco before retiring in 2004. He never completely left the maritime industry and continued to work occasionally as an engineering consultant for the Maritime Administration, Maersk Lines, Ltd and others. He was a Lieutenant in the Naval Reserve (inactive duty). He was the recipient of the Vietnam Sealift Medal.
Randy spent 25 years in Auburn, CA with wife Kathy and their two children, Grant and Holly. Randy loved and remained friends with several people there affectionately known as the "Auburn gang".
In 2002, Randy married Brooks Morgan and eventually settled in the historic neighborhood of Mansion Park in Chico, CA. Together they restored a 1926 cottage, where Randy spent his remaining years. In addition to home restoration, Randy enjoyed building and restoring small cars, hiking, golfing, and the many road trips he and Brooks traveled together. He was a dedicated Yosemite Assoc. Volunteer, a member of the Friends of Lassen Park Assoc., and volunteer driver for Shriner's hospital transporting children between Chico and Sacramento, CA and a proponent for Habitat for Humanity.
Randy will be best remembered for being a selfless, courageous man who smiled his way through a long battle with cancer. He was gracious to just about everyone he encountered. Randy dearly loved his children and grandchildren, nieces and nephews. He was a wonderful "bonus dad" to Brooks' daughter, Paige.
Randy is survived by wife, Brooks Sautner of Chico; daughter, Paige Haworth (Jeff) and grandson, Parker of Redding, CA; son, Grant Sautner (Sarah) and grandson, Levi of Chico, CA; and daughter, Holly Sautner of Santa Rosa, CA; sisters, Jane Irvine (John) of Cotati, CA, Sue Butler (Ed) of Cool, CA, and Joan Newton (Gary) of Garden Valley, CA; and lifelong friends, Philip and Susan Cox of Cottonwood, CA.
He is preceded in death by parents, George and Helen Sautner; brother, George "Chip" Sautner, and sister, Catherine Murphy.
Randy's family would like to express their deepest appreciation to Dr. Sam Mazj, Feather River Cancer Center, Dr. Anne Dawson, Enloe Radiation Oncology, Dr. Christine Schooling, Dr. Kevin Brown, and their respective office staff and nurses.
We are especially grateful for the incredible care provided by the nurses at Enloe Infusion Center - all of whom saw Randy through his journey with cancer. Randy's favorite charities were Shriner's Hospital, Sacramento, Yosemite Assoc. and Habitat for Humanity.
All are welcome to join Randy's family for a Celebration of his Life which will be held at the Lakeside Pavilion at California Park, 2565 Lakeside Dr., Chico, CA on Saturday, August 18, 2012 from 2 to 4:30 p.m.
