SHIRLEY ALTHEA STANLEY Shirley Althea Stanley, 90, of Chico, CA passed away on Wednesday, March 19, 2014. Daughter of John and Emma Hammons, she was born on Feb 29, 1924, in Clairton. Penn, and lived in Chicago, IL and Pittsburg, PA until 1964 when she moved to Northridge, CA. In 1944 she became the first woman to receive a BS in Chemistry from the University of Pittsburg. After graduation she worked as chemist at DuPont, where, among other things, she invented "white" linoleum, a color no one had been able to duplicate. After the war she was a stay-at-home mom until her youngest child started kindergarten and then she taught Jr. High science in Los Angeles and Honduras for 20 years before retiring. She retired to Lake Almanor, CA and eventually moved to Chico, CA. Shirley is survived by sons James of Palo Alto, CA and Robert of Chico, CA; daughters Hope Quinn of Vancouver, WA and Kristin Clark of Fremont, CA; brother James Hammons of Bunnel, Florida; seven grandchildren and eleven great -grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband of twenty-nine years, James Stanley; brother Russell; and sisters Aileen, Colleen and Isabelle. A memorial service will be held on Sat., April 12th at 2 pm at First Baptist Church, 850 Palmetto Ave., Chico, CA.
