Alleene Luther Withers Obituary
ALLEENE LUTHER WITHERS 1922-2014 Alleene Luther Withers died February 10, 2014 in Oroville, CA. She was born in Oroville, to Robert and Edna Luther. She attended local schools and graduated from the Oroville Union High School. Alleene continued her education at Chico State College where she earned her bachelor's degree and teaching credentials. She took her first teaching job on the Monterey Peninsula from where, 40 years later, she retired. During her early years, she earned additional degrees at the California State University, San Jose, MA, Educational Technology, and the University of San Francisco, MA, Administration. During her tenure in the Pacific Grove School District, she was the Director of Instructional Materials and a grant writer for federal and state funds. Upon retirement she worked 5 years as a consultant for the California State Department of Education. During her career, Alleene belonged to several professional organizations and served on various boards and committees. She was awarded a life membership in her school district's Parent Teachers Association, and belonged to the American Association of University Women, and Delta Kappa Gamma, on the Monterey Peninsula. She was also a Charter and Life Member of the Carmel Chapter, Order of Eastern Star, and held a Charter Membership of the Monterey Bay Aquarium. Before the aquarium opened she was a consultant to the marine biologists in developing the curriculum for student learning experiences on Aquarium field trips. Alleene was married to Robert (Bob) Withers, also a native of Oroville. They continued to live in Pebble Beach in their retirement years, for several years before returning to Oroville to be near Bob's family. Alleene is survived by her nieces and nephews of her late brother, Robert Luther, and the nephews of her husband. At her request no services will be held. Sometime in the future a private gathering of family and close friends will be held at a Pebble Beach ocean location where her ashes will be released over the ocean She would have appreciated any memorial gifts be made to the Oroville High School Library. Arrangements entrusted to the Neptune Society of No CA, Chico Branch.
