ANDREW W. (ANDY) HAMMOND Obituary
ANDREW W. (ANDY) HAMMOND At his request, no services will be held for Andrew W. (Andy) Hammond, who died November 8, 2012. He was born in the Black Hills of South Dakota on April 5, 1925, to Reuben A. and Inger M. Hammond. He attended high school in Deadwood, S.D. and enlisted in the Navy at age 17. He served aboard a carrier in the Pacific Theater, earning the rating of Gunner's Mate, First Class. Following the war, he attended the University of Minnesota, where he met and married Joanne Carolyn Reisberg. After graduation, he was employed by Minneapolis Honeywell's Ordnance Division in Minneapolis and later as a Research Engineer at Boeing Aerospace in Seattle. He retired from the latter in 1989, when he and Joanne moved to Chico, California. A charter member of the Oregon-California Trails Association, he spent much of his retirement years studying the 1840-1860 westward migration and wrote numerous articles on the subject, using, as source material, the diaries and journals left by those who took part in that migration. With his wife, he researched and mapped the 1851 Beckwourth Trail for the National Park Service and co-authored two books: "Following the Beckwourth Trail", and "The Look of the Elephant: The Westering Experience In the Words of Those Who Lived It, 1841-1861." Survivors include his wife of 64 years, and four children: Andrew C. (Chris) Hammond, Vancouver WA; Linda L. Hammond, Downingtown PA; Carol J. Newhouse, Sunnyside WA, and Sonja M. Wittman, Camano Island, WA. Also surviving are six grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren and his sister, Ruth Pipal, of Boise, Idaho.
