CARL LEONARD WERTZ Carl Leonard Wertz was born in Chico, California on June 12, 1923. He entered into eternal rest on December 30, 2012 after enjoying 89 years of life on this earth. Carl is preceded in death by his parents, James L. Wertz and Mary Alice (Entler) Wertz; his loving wife and companion of 68 years, Ann J. (Rupp) Wertz; and his loving sister, Alice Marie Mitchel. He is survived by his sister, Frances Lurene Spiker; and his brother, Donald Lee Wertz; nieces, Kim Deter and Patricia Knack; and great-nieces and great-nephew, Brooke Arthur, Tonya Arthur, Scott Deter and Shannon Knack. Carl attended Chico public schools and volunteered for service in the United States Army during World War II. He served in both the European and Pacific theaters. After an honorable discharge, he served as a fireman in Burlingame, CA for several years and then managed a recreational rental facility in Napa County at Lake Berryessa. He later moved to the island of Lanai in Hawaii, where he managed a Dole pineapple plantation for over 30 years. He retired in 1985 and he and Ann returned to California and settled in Magalia, where they enjoyed many happy and peaceful years in the country. A celebration of Carl's life and interment will be held on Thursday, Jan. 10, 2013 at 11:00 a.m. at Glen Oaks Memorial Park in Chico.
