PRIVATE FIRST CLASS CASEY HOLMES, U.S. MARINES CORPS Casey James Holmes of Chico, CA, age 20, died in a Marine training accident at the Twentynine Palms Marine Corps Air Ground Combat Center on March 11, 2013. Casey was born in Chico, CA to Carol Denning and Larry Holmes. He attended Chico High School and Butte Community College. Casey graduated from Chico High in 2011 and enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps in May 2012. He was assigned to the 3rd Battalion, 3rd Marine Regiment, India Company at Marine Corps Base Hawaii. Private First Class Holmes' personal decorations include the National Defense Service Medal and the Global War on Terrorism Service Medal. Casey was an avid athlete in Chico, swimming with the Aquajets beginning at 5 years old. He continued to participate in several sports including basketball, football and swimming for Chico High. His athletic abilities and drive were evident during his Marine basic training, where he scored a perfect 300 for physical fitness. Casey had an exuberant personality and loving nature that is described with smiles and stories by those who knew him. His joy of spirit was cherished by his family, and appreciated by his many friends and those who trained and served with him in the Marines. Casey was extremely proud of his opportunity to serve his country as a U.S. Marine. Casey is survived by his mother, Carol Denning, Chico, CA; his father, Larry Holmes, Chico, CA; brothers, Kieffer Holmes, Stockton, CA, Rex Holmes, Tacoma WA, Jesse Holmes and sister Nina Holmes, Chico, CA; grandparents, Edward and Hollis Denning, Bellevue WA, and Alan and Fedora Holmes, Fort Bragg, CA; and many loving aunts, uncles, cousins and friends. A mass of Christian burial will be held Friday, March 22, 2013 at 1:00 p.m. at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Chico, followed by a reception at the Chico Elks Lodge.
