Sheree & Sylvia, we are so sorry to read of your father's passing.

Dear Margaret, Sylvia and Sheree, We are devastated to hear of the loss of your beloved husband and father, he was the absolute best in my book.

Our son recently called and informed us of Bud's passing. Unfortunately we could not get over to Chiefland in time to offer you our heart-felt sympathies in person. I promise you I will come see you when I get over that way again. Who knows, maybe it will be a warm day and we can all go out to the cemetery for a little visit… that would sure be nice.

I will always have fond memories of growing up with the Hiers family as my next door neighbors. The 50s were a wonderful time to be a youngster, but having the Hiers nearby only added to those great times. I vividly remember going over to your home and talking with you all after supper, all the while hoping you would ask me to stay and watch TV. And you always asked… You would sit beside each other and I would lay on the floor. Those were some wonderful shows and some wonderful times.

I want to share a few of my fondest memories of Bud with you. I remember leaving Mr Leisman Cannon's station in the fuel truck with Bud and going down to the City Service bulk plant to load up with fuel. Bud would let me put the fill pipe in the tanks, start the pump, pull the levers, and start the fuel running. He was always particular when I stopped filling that the tank load indicator (used to show when the tank was full) was above the line. He would never even consider cheating anyone! We would then check with Uncle Delma and head out to make our deliveries. I felt like a big-shot when I got to do these things with Bud. And he always made the ride interesting and fun.

Bud knew everybody and where everybody lived. It always amazed me that he knew exactly where we were going and the quickest and best way to get there. I think he had a GPS in his head way before the rest of us had access to one.

Speaking of Mr Cannon's station, I remember how many of the local men (Mr Darby Haines, Mr Call Cason, Mr James Beauchamp, Mr Marlin Walker and many more) would all gather there and share a cold Coke, swap stories, tease each other about something, and then laugh out loud. Of course, Bud would be involved and get all of us laughing and carrying on. Next door was Mr Adkins restaurant. One day Bud and I were in there and when we went up to pay, a Yankee tourist said to me, “Boy, where did you get all those freckles?” I was embarrassed and I smartly replied, “They came with the head.” That sure shut him up, but Bud grabbed me by the shoulder and gave me that look… When we finally got out to the truck and proceeded to go to the bulk plant, Bud said to me, “That was not the right thing to do, but after thinking about it for the past few minutes, that Yankee sure deserved to be put in his place.” We both had a good laugh on that and Bud always loved to tell this story to anyone that would listen.

Just one more memory of many I have to share with you… When my father passed away it was in November and deer season was not far off. Bud knew how much I loved to hunt, so he and the “Little Preacher” (the pastor at the Chiefland Church of Christ) took it upon themselves to build us a “portable deer camp” so they could take me hunting. After a full day of working these two men built us a camp on the back of a large farm truck. I will always remember how they went the extra mile to take me hunting and keep me from being depressed.

Ladies, take comfort in knowing that Bud is in Heaven with his Lord and Master, his Mother, his Father, his Sister, and many, many more people that he knew and loved. Hopefully we can all live our lives in a manner that will permit us to join with him in a big family reunion.

I was fortunate to have a “Second Father” and his name was Bud Hiers!
