John Delma 'Bud' Hiers, Jr., 88, of Chiefland, passed away Monday, Feb. 4, 2013, at Ayers Health & Rehab in Trenton, after a long illness.
He was a member of the Cherry Sink Church of Christ and a former longtime member of Chiefland Church of Christ.
He was born Sept. 27, 1924 in Levy County to John Delma Hiers Sr. and Velma Clyatt Hiers.
He was a proud Army Veteran of WWII, serving with the 258 Combat Engineers in the European Theater and the crossing of the Rhine River. After serving his country, he returned to Chiefland, owning and operating Hiers Oil Company for 36 years.
Bud was a lifetime member of the VFW, having been one of the founding members and the author of the original name of the Chiefland VFW Rebel Post 5625.
He is survived by his loving wife of 62 years, Margaret Wimberly Hiers of Chiefland; two daughters, Sylvia Hiers and her husband, Robbie Emmons and Sheree H. Lancaster and her husband, Howell E. Lancaster Jr., all of Trenton.
He is also survived by two sisters, Johnnie Mae Cone of Ocala and Helen Usher of Chiefland; six grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Violet Crawford of California.
Funeral services will be Thursday, Feb. 7 at 2 p.m. at the Chiefland Church of Christ with burial following at the Chiefland Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Haven Hospice of the Tri Counties or the Mildred Bishop Scholarship Fund for Geriatric Education at Ayers Health & Rehab in Trenton.
