He is also survived by his sisters, Peggy Seitz (Gary) and Mary Lee McKell; a brother, David Cameron McKell (Lisa); a sister-in-law, Barbara McKell; step-sisters, Sandra Uhrig (Joe) and Carol Peindl (Richard); and his lifetime companion, Kathy Gray.

Jim graduated from Chillicothe High School and majored in music theory at Marietta University and Ohio University. As a teenager, Jim played keyboards in a local band, The Brud, and later traveled to all 50 states as the sound engineer for The Pure Prairie League. He met Kathy in 1980 when they both taught at the Recording Workshop in Massieville, OH.

Jim worked as a recording engineer and producer in Nashville for more than 20 years. He worked with many artists over the years, from the Judds to Kenny Rogers. Much of his work was recognized with Gold and Platinum record sales, and he was nominated for a Grammy for Single of the Year, and for the Country Music Association (CMA) Single of the Year, for Kenny Rogers' "Buy Me a Rose". Jim was greatly respected by his peers in the music and recording industry for his passion for his craft and the perfection of his songs. He was a mentor to many and was always willing to share his knowledge with anyone.

Jim moved to Atlanta in 2006 and continued his music work. He also had an incredibly creative mind developing patents for inventions such as bullet-proof furniture, flexible fencing and telephone handsets, among many other products. He loved the outdoors, animals of all kinds, beautiful music and discussions of many profound subjects.

A brief memorial service will be held at the First Presbyterian Church, 13 Mead Drive, Chillicothe, OH, 45601, at 11:00 am on Saturday, December 8, 2012.
