Leon R. Deardorff

WAVERLY: Leon R. Deardorff, 80, passed away on April 15, 2013. He was born on February 20, 1933 in Bismarck, North Dakota.

Leon was preceded in death by parents Roy Clifford Deardorff l and Alice Loretta (Staudenraus) Deardorff.

He is survived by his beloved wife of over 26 years, Mary (Dennis) Deardorff of Waverly, Ohio; he is also survived by his three sons, two daughters and five children through marriage.

Mr. Deardorff will be missed by his three sons, Daniel Deardorff of El Reno, Oklahoma, Roy (Cindi) Deardorff ll of Mustang, Oklahoma, Leon Deardorff Jr. ("Lee") of Mustang, Oklahoma; and two daughters, Arlene (Dave) Nininger of Columbus, Ohio, Bernadette (David) Howard of Dublin, Ohio; Leon is also survived by children Paul (Karen) Hinton of Glen Carbon, Illinois; and daughters, Tracy (Ron) Casto of Waverly, Ohio, Cathy (Dwayne) Wynn of Frankfort, Ohio, and Georgann Meyer and Marcca Eggleston of Chillicothe, Ohio;

Mr. Deardorff is survived by an older brother, Roy (Mary) Deardorff of Middletown, Ohio; and his beloved sister, Arlene Stone of Hilton Head, South Carolina. Leon is preceded in death by brother Donald (Loraine) Deardorff of Hamilton, Ohio.

Mr. Deardorff was predeceased by his brother-in-law and good friend, Lion Jim (Doretta) Dennis of Chillicothe, Ohio. He is also survived by his brother-in-law Donald (Sally) Dennis, and sister-in-law Virginia (Steve) Good, both of Circleville, Ohio.

The many grandchildren include Stephanie (Jake) Ramey, and her children Brianna and Ryan of El Reno, Oklahoma, Kelsey and Chloe Howard of Dublin, Ohio and Christopher Deardorff of Mustang, Oklahoma, Teresa Casto, Ron (Ashley) Casto lll, Leah (Christian) Heil, Sarah (Billy) Norton, Deborah Heaton (Tim), Joanna (Robert) Rahn, Ashley Meyer and Christine Wynn, and 23 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild, who is on the way. He also leaves behind many nieces and nephews.

After proudly serving in the Air Force, Mr. Deardorff went on to earn a Masters Degree from the University of Alabama and taught high school in Mobile, Alabama. He was retired from the Social Security Administration and had been employed in Alabama, Mississippi and Chillicothe, Ohio as a claims rep and field rep.

Mr. Deardorff was a 30 year member of the Chillicothe Evening Lions Club serving as President, Zone Five Chairman, Convention Chairman, Fair Booth Chairman and the Newsletter Editor. The job he enjoyed most was being the breakfast cook for 20 years at the Lions Ross County Fair Booth and occasionally cooking lasagna for his fellow Lions at the weekly Lions meetings.

Mr. Deardorff was a "Cradle Catholic" and was a member of St. Peter Catholic Church in Chillicothe. Every Sunday, he and his wife, Mary, would attend Mass, and also services at the First Church of the Nazarene, both in Chillicothe, Ohio. He had many treasured friends at both churches. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus, Council 1071. His family will miss his wisdom and his guidance, his stories and his cooking.

Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11:00am Tuesday at St. Peter Catholic Church, Rev. William Hahn, Celebrant. Military graveside services conducted by the Ross Co. Veterans Honor Guard will follow in St. Margaret Cemetery. Friends may call Monday from 4-8pm at Haller Funeral Home where a Lions Service will be held at 7:30pm.
