Russell L. Shonkwiler

CHILLICOTHE: Russell L. Shonkwiler, 77, of Chillicothe, died at 2:50am Wednesday, March 19, 2014, at Adena Regional Medical Center following a brief illness.

He was born December 9, 1936, in Scioto County, OH, to the late Arthur and Kathern (Henderson) Shonkwiler. In 1954, he graduated from Greenfield-McClain High School. Russ was a very talented athlete, having made the All-State baseball team. He attended Bowling Green State University on a football scholarship. In 1955, he entered the US Army where he continued to play both football and baseball while stationed in Germany.

Upon his honorable discharge from the Army, he worked as a salesman for Highland Enterprise Lumber Co. On September 27, 1958, he married Shirley M. Lovett. They moved to Chillicothe in 1959 and Russ sold insurance for National Life Insurance Co. He later sold advertisements for the Chillicothe Gazette and then retired in 1998 as the store manager for the E. M. Smith Jewelers store in Circleville.

Russ is survived by his wife, Shirley Shonkwiler; his son and daughter-in-law Brent (Kathy) Shonkwiler, of Hilliard; daughter and son-in-law Diane (Mark) Click, Chillicothe; grandchildren: Sara, Rick and Robert Shonkwiler, Hilliard; Sydney (Dyllon) Cryder, Chillicothe; step-granddaughters: Lexy (Ted) Stearos, Chillicothe; Dee Dee (Saul) Puentes, Hemet, CA; step-great-grandsons: Phillip, Braiden and Alex; and a brother and sister-in-law Charles (Rita) Shonkwiler, Greenfield. He was predeceased by his parents, his in-laws Lee and Grace Lovett; and a brother Art Shonkwiler.

Russ enjoyed playing fast-pitch softball, having starred on teams sponsored by River Oil, Uhl's IGA and Penn Trucking. He was an avid hunter and fisherman. He was a former member of the Chillicothe Lion's Club, a Kentucky Colonel, a longtime member of the Cavalier Club and a member of the "Chain Gang" for over 30 years.

Funeral services will be held at 3:00pm Saturday, March 22, at the Haller Funeral Home with Pastor Obadiah Harris officiating. Military graveside services conducted by the Ross Co. Veterans Honor Guard will be held at the convenience of the family in Beaver Cemetery, Rainsboro. Friends may call Saturday from 11am until 3pm at Haller Funeral Home.
