CHILLICOTHE: Elma McCarty, age 93, left her earthly home for her heavenly home on July 13, 2014. She was born August 17, 1920, in Chillicothe, to Thomas and Rhoda Russell Irvin. On July 27, 1941, she married the love of her life, Vincent Basil McCarty, who preceded her in death on December 9, 1953.
She is survived by four children, Vincent Dale (Lettie) McCarty, of Middleburg Heights, Ohio, Sonja Haddox, Jeannine Oyer, and Monena McCarty, all of Chillicothe. She is also survived by six grandchildren, Vince (Becky) McCarty, Valerie (Thomas) Heckenthaler, Tammy (Tony) Eallonardo, Kim (John) Gragg, Angela Oyer, and Christopher Oyer. She will also be missed by 13 great grandchildren; five great great grandchildren; two sisters-in-law, Monetta McCarty Yost and Dorothy McCarty; and a host of nieces, nephews, and cousins. Lou Ellen (Kenneth) Hay, Eugene (Linda) Morris, and Janice Doyle came into Elma's life through a second marriage. Elma was considered a second "mom" to Barbara Moody, Karen Hurles, and Terry Ramsey. She enjoyed their visits over the years.
In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by four brothers, Everett, Ophrey, Lloyd, and Wayne; five sisters, Ellen Judy, Edna Goble, Cora Goble, Bertha Lindsey, Mae Carpenter, and three siblings who died in infancy. Also preceding her in death was a special son-in-law, Bruce Oyer.
Elma had many interests including shopping at thrift stores, yard sales, and auctions; genealogy; game shows; and word puzzles. The most important part of her life, however, was taking care of her family and friends. Elma always had time to visit with the grandkids and other family, either in person or over the phone. Christmas was a special time of year for her and she went out of her way to make the holiday as special for others as it was for her.
Elma was a charter member of Brookside Church. In later years she attended Walnut Street UMC with her daughter and son-in-law.
