Robert C. Tatman, DDS

LONDONDERRY: Dr. Robert C. Tatman DDS, 93, of Chillicothe, passed from this life Tuesday January 14th, at Traditions of Chillicothe following a brief illness.

He was born in Chillicothe, Ohio on January 1, 1921 to Mart E. and Wyoma (Linton) Tatman who preceded him in death. Also preceding Robert in death were sister-in-laws Pat White and Juanita McGuire.

Robert lived in Chillicothe until 1932 when his father was transferred by the Federal Penitentiary System to Lewisburg Pennsylvania as a heavy equipment operator. He graduated from Lewisburg High School in 1939 and attended Bucknell University. Upon returning to Chillicothe, he attended Wilmington College and Ohio University to obtain his undergraduate degree in pre-dentistry. He was accepted at St. Louis University Dental School and graduated in 1945. He completed his internship at the Cleveland Marine Hospital in Cleveland Ohio.

On April 25, 1943 Robert married his childhood sweetheart, Opal Eileen White. She preceded Robert in death on January 8, 2002 after a blessed marriage of 58 years. Survivors include sons Robert E. Tatman and wife Patricia (Cook), Daniel L. Tatman and wife Jacquelin L. (Pelletier), and his beloved daughter Shirley A. Drake (Tatman) and husband Robert M. Drake. Five grandchildren are Traci Lynn Tatman, Brian Scott Tatman and wife Lynn, Jason R Drake and wife Jeanne, Aaron L Drake and wife Monica and Eric-Paul Daniel Tatman. Great Grandchildren are Ainsley, Jayvier, and Yelaina Tatman; Dalton Drake, Hudson Drake and Kannon Strausbaugh . Also surviving are brothers-in-law Jack McGuire, Frank White and a special friend from Pennsylvania Nora Judy. Robert was also very attached to faithful pet Buddy the cat.

Robert served in the military during World War II while attending St. Louis University, and also enlisted in the Air Force during the Korean Conflict. He was commissioned as a Captain and stationed in San Marcos Texas, serving as a Dentist until being honorably discharged in 1952.

Robert's calling in life was to be a Dentist. He often said he was "born to be a Dentist". He practiced in Chillicothe for over 65 years and loved being able to help his patients. He did everything possible to save a tooth, and there was hardly anywhere "Doc" would go that a former patient didn't call out to him. He worked with a very close family of dental assistants through the years and often said he was very blessed to have had them with him.

Robert was a proud Christian and accepted Christ as his Savior when he was seven years old and a member of the Church of Christ in Christian Union in Chillicothe. He later attended the First United Methodist Church in Chillicothe for over 34 years and served by holding many positions within the Church. In 1994 Robert and Opal joined the Berian Sunday School Class at the Tabernacle Baptist Church in Chillicothe.

Robert took an interest in many activities through the years. He enjoyed spending time with his family, hunting and fishing, restoring a Model T Ford and raising horses on the family farm near Londonderry Ohio. He was a member of the Chillicothe Evening Lions Club, American Dental Society, Ohio Dental Association and the local Rehwenkel Dental Society.

The Family would like to thank the many dedicated caregivers at Traditions of Chillicothe for their love and support of our Father. It was certainly a blessing to us.
