Eldon Ray Crawley "PaPa" was born in Caryville, on Jan. 25, 1933 to the late Maggie Burke Crawley and Alonzo Crawley. He was the youngest of six children. As a young boy, he moved to Chipley to a home on South 3rd Street, where his mother would remain until her passing. A few of Eldon's most memorable jobs as a young teen were keeping up the Chipley Tiger football field and grounds and as a projectionist at the Vance Theatre and Panama City Theatre. In his later teens, Eldon enlisted in the United States Navy
and retired 22 years later as a Master Sergeant 1. He loved the Navy so much; even as his illness progressed he would tell endless stories. After he retired he moved back to his childhood home, still a bachelor. In 1978, Eldon sold his home on South 3rd St. and built a home on Glenwood Ave., and on Oct. 17, 1978, Eldon married Barbara Varros Ward and became a father to Juliet Ward Valencia and Jason Lee Ward. The following year he became a grandfather to Amber Williams Jimenez, (Jorge) of Chipley, followed by Julie Marie Williams of Ft. Walton Beach and Jaime Joshua Valencia of Ft. Walton Beach. He was a wonderful and loving "PaPa". Eldon was the manager of the Dietary Department at Washington County Hospital for many years before he decided to go back to school and join the Washington County Sheriff's Department. He retired from the State of Florida in 1994. In 2002, Eldon became a great grandfather to Destiny Hatten followed by Adrian Hatten, Gabriel Jimenez, Alyssa Ward, Aaliyah Knochenmus and Isaac Jimenez. We will greatly miss Eldon, husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather. Our world will never be the same. We love you PaPa.
