Fletcher Webster Burgess left this earthly life on 5 Dec 2010 to be with his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, for all eternity. Fletcher was born in a farmhouse between Leonia, and Petty Crossroads on 29 Dec. 1936, to Ida Alene Helms and Jessie James Burgess. He was raised in Leonia, primarily by his grandparents, Web and Ida Cain Helms. He graduated from Ponce de Leon High School Class in 1955. He graduated Troy State University, Summa Cum Laude, 27 May 1977 with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Business Administration/Management. Fletcher was a United States Air Force veteran with 4 years active duty and 2 years reserves, 1956 – 1962. He had a 41-year career on the Eglin AFB Test Ranges with the Operations & Maintenance government contractors Vitro Services, Tracor, RCA, Marconi, and BAE. He began his career March 1960 as an Electronics Tech at Test Site A-20 and retired as Range Operations Manager in Dec. 2000. Fletcher enjoyed and cared for the people he met and worked with during his career. He was especially fond of the nine years he spent at Cape San Blas as Site Chief and the people he worked with. He loved living in Mexico Beach during those years and went back often having kept a home there. Fletcher was a resident of DeFuniak Springs and a member of Southwide Baptist Church where he taught the Senior Adult Sunday School Class.
He was preceded in death by his parents, grandparents, stepfather, Lee Padgett and half-brother, Dale Padgett.
Fletcher is survived by his loving wife of 28 years, Jewel Hunt Burgess; five sons, Billy (Debbie), Jason (Jennifer), Lance Hammac, Neal Pierce, and Tony Burgess; Grandchildren, Chris Phillips, Brian, Blake, Heather, Lindsay, Samantha, Jacob, Bree, Cole and Makayla Hammac, Lauren, Valerie, and Jackson Pierce; half-brothers, Dwaine (Vicky), Lloyd Padgett (Pauline), James L. and Danny Burgess; one half-sister, Vicki Keel; mother-in-law Callie Hunt; brothers and sisters-in-law, Joyce (Bob) Thomas, Wilber (Chris), Joe (Mary), Bob (Ernestine), Larry (Clarice), Virgil (Pat) Hunt, Lyndal (Harold) Petty, Janice (Dan) Mathis, and Katrina (John) Sousa; 103 year-old aunt, Bessie Morrison whom he loved dearly; many cousins and God richly blessed him with numerous friends who were like family.
Funeral services were held 8 Dec., at Southwide Baptist Church with internment in the New Harmony Baptist Church Cemetery. Pall Bearers were Jim Wasson, Willy Tatman, James Bird, Marshall Rodgers, Peck Cawthon, and Charlie Morse. Honorary Pall Bearers will be his Senior Adult Sunday School Class, Dr. Mark Rathal will officiate.
