Shirley Ann Lewis Potter was born to the late Irene Lewis and Thomas Kent on Aug. 7, 1944 in Chipley. Shirley accepted Christ into her life at an early age and was a member of Jerusalem Missionary Baptist Church, where she remained until her demise. She was a member of the Senior Choir, where she served as President, Senior Women Mission and VBS volunteer. She was also a member of New Vizh-uhn, Inc., where she was a vital member that loved to give back to the community. Shirley was a 1962 graduate of Roulhac High School. Furthering her education pursuits, she was a 1964 graduate with an AA Degree from Jackson Jr. College of Jackson, Miss., and a 1968 graduate earning her BS Degree in Social Science from Jacksonville State University. Later in life Shirley pursued her dream of becoming a Private Investigator, and graduated from the P.I. School of Atlanta, Ga., in October of 2000. Shirley worked with the Department of Children and Families starting in May 1973 as a Senior Social Worker. She was employed there for 32 years, retiring in June of 2005. Shirley received numerous awards for Outstanding Public Assistance Employee throughout her career. One of the sweetest joys of her life was marrying her sweetheart, Phil L. Potter, Sr. and to this union two children were born and reared, Phil, Jr. & Philanda. Shirley was an avid sportsman. She taught swimming lessons at the Community Center in Chipley. She was an assistant P.E. Instructor at Roulhac High School while attending College. She was an extraordinary softball player with the "Chipley Sluggers" and various other teams in the surrounding area. Shirley could play all positions but she was first and foremost "A Pitcher". Shirley was also the Parade Coordinator for many of the events that took place in her community. "Shirl" as she was affectionately known by all, was a people person, full of life and enthusiasm. Shirley was loved by all and will be sorely missed. She was one-of-a kind, never to be duplicated or replicated. She fought a good fight and her course was finished. Shirley took flight from this earthly life on Thursday, April 10, 2014 at approx. 6:05 P.M. in the Northwest Florida Community Hospital of Chipley.

Shirley will be cherished, loved, and remembered by her beloved son, Phil L. Potter, Jr.; her loving daughter, Philanda L. Potter; her cherished grandchildren, Phil Potter III and Jayda Potter; the father of her children, Phil L. Potter; beloved sister and brother, Vickie Lewis and Timothy Lewis; loving aunts, Jenell Cotton, Ada Merriell, and Inez Edwards; her dear friends, Fred Ward and Benjamin King; special niece, Sharon Sheffield and family. Shirley was loved by a host of cousins, other family and endeared friends.
Funeral Services were held at 11 a.m., Saturday, April 19, 2014 at the Jerusalem Missionary Baptist Church of Chipley, with pastor, the Rev. Price Wilson, the Rev. L.V. Farmer and the Rev. Mary L. Sharpe, officiating. Interment followed in the Southside Cemetery of Chipley. The remains were repose one hour prior to services at the church. Cooper Funeral Home of Chipley, directing.
