Stephen (Steve) Criss Beard Longtime resident of the Santa Rosa Beach area, Steve Beard, 70, died Friday, Feb. 15, after an extended illness. Born Feb. 8, 1943, Steve was adopted as an infant by Fred Beard and Mar Criss Beard. He grew up in Detroit, Mich., attended the University of Michigan and obtained an MBA in Business from Wayne State University. Steve retired from AT&T, but held many other positions. He liked working with the public and enjoyed taking jobs in sales even after his retirement. While in the Santa Rosa Beach area, he worked as a cashier at Publix in Watercolor Crossing. While still living in Michigan, Steve loved scuba diving and was a rescue diver for the hydroplane races. He enjoyed exploring shipwrecks in the Great Lakes area of Michigan and Canada. In addition to diving and his boat, Steve also loved traveling on his motorcycle and made many friends at biker rallies. Described as fun, funny, handsome, and most of all charming. It is the hope that those qualities will survive in his wife Jeane Beard, children from a previous marriage, Patricia Whipple and Cassandra Esselink, and grandchildren, Conor, Maddison, Shayla, and Nolan.
Steve is also survived by his brother, David Beard and nephews, Donald and Christopher. He will be missed by the children and grandchildren, of Jeane Beard; daughters, Ellen Marion, Ann Barker, Gena Barrett; grandchildren, Laura, Denise, Ryan, and Russell, and great grandson Zavier.
The family asks that no flowers be sent, but a donation in his name to Heart Fund or The National Greyhound Association. Friends are invited to meet with his family for a memorial service at 3 p.m., on Saturday, Feb. 23, 2013 at 458 Blue Mountain Road. It was Steve's wish to be cremated and leave a few of his ashes on the beach.
