March 30, 1928 – June 7, 2018
Marjorie, beloved and loving wife, mother, grandmother, aunt and friend, died on June 7, 2018 in Thunder Bay with her daughter Karen by her side, two months after celebrating her 90th birthday. Marj was born on her grandmother's farm in Englehart to Mary and Philip Komaike and was the youngest of four children. A northern Ontario girl, Marj was raised in Swastika where she eventually met and married Ralph Hagerman, a young teacher who boarded at the house next door. Marj and Ralph moved to Fort William in 1954, initially living at Winston Hall. For over sixty-four years Marj was an active member of First Church United and then First Wesley United, running the Loon Lake church camp in the summer with Ralph, participating in the couples' club and pinching perogies with her friends in the UCW. Marj remained at home while her daughters were young and then worked at Sears, retiring in her late sixties. Mom was also a valued volunteer at Grandview Lodge. Always a sociable person, Marj enjoyed curling, golfing and playing duplicate bridge. Mom loved to travel and meet new people. She held out hopes of enjoying another cruise with her daughter Debbie as the first one was the trip of a life-time for her. Marj loved her family and friends. We have many memories to cherish: happy hours at the cottage, family dinners, solving the world's problems while golfing with Fraser and snuggling on the couch with Katelyn while playing Banana grams. Marj is missed and mourned by her daughters Debbie Gray (Malcolm) and Karen Davies (Gary), her grandchildren Katelyn and Fraser Gray and many nieces and nephews from Ontario to British Columbia. She was predeceased by her husband Ralph in 2013 and her daughter Jane in 1994. Many thanks to the lovely ladies of the UCW and to Evelyn, Pat, Marion and Tyler for their extraordinary care of and compassion for our mother during her final challenging months. Thanks also to nurses Lily and Theresa at St. Joseph's Hospice who cared for Mom with quiet respect and compassion during her final hours. A funeral service will be held on Thursday, June 14, 2018 at 11:00 a.m. at First Wesley United Church. We will gather to sing some of Marj's favourite hymns and give thanks for her presence in our lives. A reception in the church hall will be held after the service. Interment will occur at a later date in Elgin cemetery. Flowers are gratefully declined. Donations in Marjorie's memory may be made to the Thunder Bay Community Auditorium, the Canadian Diabetes Association or your charity of choice.
