Monaco Sr., Joseph F - Inverness  
Joseph F. Monaco Sr., age 89, of Inverness, Florida, died Monday, Feb. 23, 2015, in Inverness, under the care of Hospice of Citrus County and the Nature Coast. He was born April 29, 1925, in Pelham, New York, son of Mathilda (Pirkey) and Joseph F. Monaco Sr. During WWII, he served in the Navy aboard the CV-23, aircraft carrier, The USS Princeton which sunk Oct. 24, 1944, in the Battle of Leyte Gulf the Philippines in the Pacific. The ship was hit by a dive-bomber, in one of the largest battles of WWII. Joe moved to Inverness from White Plains, New York in 1987. He retired from the International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees Local 366 and later Local 1. He worked on many Broadway shows as a stage electrician. Shows such as: Showboat, Chicago, Sweet Charity, Big Deal, Coco, Camelot and Come Back to the 5 & Dime Jimmy Dean, Jimmy Dean. Joe worked as a stagehand with such actors as Katherine Hepburn, Roslind Russell, Richard Burton, Gwen Verdon, Jerry Lewis, Tommy Tune, Twiggy, Lilly Tomlin, Debbie Allen and Jerry Orbach. Joe was predeceased by his wife of 40 years, Helen Hocking Monaco; son, Joseph Monaco III; and sisters, Dorothy Granata, Margaret Cassidy and Rita DeRosa. He is survived by daughters, Helen "Bunny" Monaco of Inverness, Margaret (James) Riley of Brewster, New York and St. Petersburg, Florida; son, John (Sherrie) Monaco Las Vegas, Nevada; significant other of 27 years, Patty Stevenson of Inverness; grandchildren, David Joseph Belknap, Jennifer Riley Ferrara, James Riley, IV, Jaclyn Riley Hanna, Nicole Monaco; great grandchildren, Victoria Riley Lo Medico, Evelyn Riley, Katelyn Ferrara, Elizabeth Riley, Hayley Hanna and Margaret Hanna. The family will receive friends from 4 to 6 p.m., Thursday, Feb. 26, 2015, at the Inverness Chapel of Hooper Funeral Homes. Services will be held in Carmel, New York on a later date. Interment will take place at Gates of Heaven, Hawthorne, New York.
