Jerry McCarley, 74, of Crystal River, Fla., passed away Jan. 14, 2013. He was born Dec. 19, 1938, to Ralph and Elizabeth McCarley in Vanlue, Ohio. Jerry married Joan Beck in 1961. Throughout their life together he was a member of Christ Lutheran Church in Carey, Ohio. While in Carey, Jerry was vice president of the church council, a member of the Jaycees, and a Cub Scouts Leader. He gained many friends at Foodland/Frederick's grocery, where he worked as a meat-cutter; at Beck Concrete; and as a partner with Burson Insurance. After moving to Ontario, Canada, Jerry and Joan operated Bay Villa fishing resort in the summer, and Jerry worked as a snow plow operator during the winter. Always active in his community, Jerry served as the local harbormaster, was president of the Whitefish Falls Sportsman Club, a volunteer fire chief, and a member of the Freemasons of Canada. Jerry retired to Homosassa Springs, where he was a volunteer at the State Wildlife Park, and a citizen patrolman with the local sheriff's department.
Jerry was devoted to his family. He was preceded in death by his wife, Joan, and is survived by his children, Chris McCarley, Jeff McCarley, Heather Jo McCarley-Tomlin, and Heidi Jo McCarley Baker; siblings, Ann Wetherbee of Portsmouth, Va, Marion McCarley of Carey, Ohio, and Barbara Phillips of Pandora, Ohio; as well as four grandsons and two granddaughters.
Private cremation will take place under the direction of Brown Funeral Home & Crematory in Lecanto. A memorial service will be at Christ Lutheran Church in Carey, Ohio, 11 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 26, 2013. The family will receive visitors before the service. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Hospice of Citrus County, or to Friends of Homosassa Springs Wildlife State Park.
