Bedford, age 91, of Floral City, Florida, will be held 11:00 AM, Friday, August 15, 2014 at the Inverness Chapel of Hooper Funeral Homes with Pastor Harvey Dunn officiating. Interment will follow at Hills of Rest Cemetery, Floral City, Florida. The family will receive friends from 5:00 PM until 8:00 PM, Thursday at the Inverness Chapel of Hooper Funeral Homes. Online condolences may be sent to the family at www.HooperFuneralHome.com. Shortie passed away peacefully in her sleep on August 8, 2014, her 91st birthday, in Palmyra, MI. A resident of Floral City since 1949, Shortie was born August 8, 1923 in Georgia where she met and married her husband, Ralph Stennant Bedford. Shortie was a welder in the shipyards during World War II, while Ralph was serving in the Army. They started their family and then moved to Floral City where she spent her life. Shortie was well known throughout the Floral City community for her selfless service. She championed the petition to the D.O.T. to have the first and only traffic light in Floral City to date, placed at the intersection of highways 41 and 48. Shortie diligently safeguarded students walking to Floral City Elementary everyday, acting as the crossing guard at that intersection. She was the first 4-H leader in Floral City. Her 4-H members participated in local and state livestock shows and competitions. Shortie was a lifelong member of the American Red Cross and participated in the first First Aid Class in Floral City and helped to teach and promote first aid classes throughout her life. She joined the Volunteer Fire Department in 1963 serving as the dispatcher for the department for over 40 years. Her husband, Ralph joined the department the following year and went on to become Fire Chief in 1968. On August 8, 1989 the Citrus County Board of County Commissioners proclaimed August 11, 1989 "Ralph and Shortie Bedford Day" to honor them for their service to the community. There are too many selfless acts that Shortie did during her lifetime to list and we will never know all the lives that were saved because she cared. Survivors include 8 children, Ralph Lenard (Sherry) Bedford, James Thomas (Janice) Bedford, Jere Wayne (Patricia) Bedford, Ernest Eugene (Susan) Bedford, Jo Ann Bedford (John) Langdon, Larry (Jill) Bedford, Lloyd (Kimberly) Bedford and Floyd (Jane) Bedford of Floral City, FL, 26 grandchildren, Kevin, Michelle, Brian, Teresa, Michael Glenn, Amber, Renee, Lisa, Melissa, Amanda, Scott, Kelvin, Wayne, Aaron, Jessica, Wesley, Curtis, Kelly, Crystal, Erika, Sarah, Mary, Floyd Michael, Suzanne, Matthew and Denise and 52 great grandchildren.
