Loretta R. Schmitt, 81, of Inverness, Fla., passed away Friday, Nov. 16, 2012, at Hospice of Citrus County, Inverness.

She was born Jan. 22, 1931, in Trenton, N.J., to the late Joseph and Kathleen (O'Sullivan) Bendel. She arrived in this area in 1999, coming from Harrisburg, N.C. She was an ardent community volunteer prior to moving to Florida, having served as a firefighter, police officer and rescue squad member. In Citrus County, she was an active volunteer with the sheriff's office. She was a Lutheran.
She was preceded in death by her son. William Schmitt; and two sisters. Catherine and Theresa. Survivors include her loving husband of 56 years, George Schmitt of Inverness; two sons, Richard (Marie) Schmitt of Charlotte, N.C., and David Schmitt of Inverness; four sisters, Sarah Jones of Eugene, Ore., Eleanor Morales of El Paso, Texas, Julia Westbrook of Trenton, N.J., and Sheila Barzak of Groveville, N.J.; two brothers, John Bendel of San Diego, Calif., and Bernard Bendel of Carlton, Ore.; daughter-in-law Sandra Schmitt (William's wife) of Raleigh, N.C.; and six grandchildren.
The family will receive friends for visitation between the hours of 11 a.m. and noon Friday, Nov. 23, 2012, at the funeral home. A Celebration of Life Memorial Service will be held for Loretta at a later date. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Hospice of Citrus County, P.O. Box 641270, Beverly Hills, FL 34464. Chas. E. Davis Funeral Home, Inverness, is in charge of the arrangements.
