The life of this generous man who unselfishly gave to others began in Crystal River, Florida, Nov. 10, 1962. Tim was born to Betty Rooks Brown, a retired school teacher, and the late Honorable Ralph F. Rooks, who served as a Citrus County commissioner and a real estate broker. He grew up with two sisters, Deena and Terry, and three brothers, Mike, Alan, and Todd. Tim attended Crystal River High School and the University of Florida in Gainesville where he met friends who became a part of his family for life.
Tim genuinely cared about others less fortunate than himself. He was acutely aware of his obligations to society and committed many anonymous acts of generosity. A close friend remembers Tim's first visit to New York City, during which he was completely confounded by the poverty and felt the need to dole out his travel budget among the homeless he encountered. Throughout his adulthood, Tim cared for his community and was devoted to making it a better place. Tim was a world traveler who enjoyed many friends and cultures. He had a true spirit of adventure and embraced life with joy and anticipation.
Tim moved to Miami Beach in 1984, where he worked in the mortgage industry and later joined Macy's, Inc., where he achieved the position of director of Learning & Development. Tim touched hundreds of thousands of people during his 26-year career at Macy's, Inc. His colleagues remember him as a smart and talented professional. Over the years he was recognized with awards by many publications and professional organizations for his work. A humble man, he maintained quiet leadership. "He took his work seriously but not himself," remembers one co-worker. He retired in March and returned to Crystal River to spend time with his ailing mother. He was a loving, loyal, devoted son, brother, and friend.
Surrounded by his sisters and closest friends, Tim passed away April 25, 2014, at UF Health Shands Hospital in Gainesville. His friends and family have found peace in knowing that Tim continues living through others as an organ donor.
Tim was pre-deceased by his father, Ralph F. Rooks; maternal grandparents, Willard and Lucille Weiss; paternal grandparents, Paschel and Velma Rooks; and sister-in-law, Pamela Rooks. Tim is survived by his mother, Betty Rooks Brown; sisters, Terry Rooks (Joe Lese), and Deena Rooks Collins (Newell Collins); brothers, Mike Rooks (Francie Rooks), Alan Rooks (Mandy Rooks), and Todd Rooks (Lisa Rooks); nephews, Jason Worsham, Aaron Rooks, Todd Rooks, Alan Rooks, and Ryan Veal; nieces, Taryn Allen, Jennifer Rooks Posser, and Talesha Rooks; grandnieces and grandnephews, Ashleigh Allen, Alex Worsham, Presley Rooks, Porter Rooks, and Vivian Posser; and devoted friends and chosen family, Alex Cervantes, Linda Boles (Bridget Didsbury), and Robert Wolfarth (Alex Fernandez).
A celebration of life will be at The United Methodist Church in Crystal River at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, June 21, 2014. Friends and family are invited to join the celebration by offering public remembrances of Tim's life. In lieu of flowers, please consider giving the gift of life by donating to Life Quest or registering as an organ donor at: www.donatelife.org.
