Betty "Betz" Whittle Obituary
Whittle, Betty "Betz" 91 passed away peacefully July 29, 2017 under the loving care of Cypress Cove Care Center & Hospice. She was born May 22, 1926 in Lakeland, Fl. She has been a longtime resident of this area, living many years in Ozello and then moving to Homosassa after the No Name storm in 1993.
As a teenage girl growing up in Tampa she was an avid roller skater and joined a professional touring group before marrying Bill Whittle in 1942. She then became an Army wife and traveled extensively having lived in Austria and Japan with her family. After her husband retired they settled in Treasure Island, Fl. where she worked as a receptionist in a veterinarian hospital for 15 years in Largo, Fl.
After visiting Ozello she became completely enchanted with the area, moved from Treasure Island and lived in Ozello for 20 years. She could often be seen riding up and down Ozello Trail on her red scooter. Betz had been in charge of the Ozello Arts and Crafts Festival for 15 years giving of her time and energy freely.
After the No Name storm it became necessary for her to move to Homosassa. She was a regular member of the Senior Center and often drove there via highway 19 on her electric scooter despite everyone's warnings! She attended the Bicentennial swimming pool in Crystal River regularly.
Betz had many friends and many hobbies. She loved gardening, was a talented artist, seamstress and won many awards with her crocheted items. When her snowbird neighbors were away for the summer she was there to mow their lawns and check their homes daily. Her favorite color was purple, everything purple! Scrabble was her passion and crossword puzzles came out of her pocket wherever she was.
Betty is survived by her son Kenneth Whittle and his wife Wilda of Treasure Island, FL; daughter Peggy Franzen of Homosassa, 4 grandchildren Brian Franzen of Tampa, Guy Franzen of Tampa, Wendi Crabtree and her longtime companion Ryan Barbara of Archer, FL, Wayne Whittle and his wife Maureen of Largo, Fl. 2 great grandchildren whom she is very proud of: Meagan Whittle and Eric Whittle both of Largo, Fl., two sisters Peggy Hudson of Plano, TX. and Margaria Fichtner of Coconut Grove, Fl. and several nieces and nephews. Betty was predeceased by her husband Bill Whittle.
Betty will be remembered by her friends to be rather strong willed and feisty at times with a very soft heart and always there to help anyone.
"Rest in peace dear Betz"
